Hong Kong Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food York Chow said on Wednesday that the Hong Kong government plans to have a cross border drill with the Mainland for the prevention of avian flu.

After attending a conference about the business sector setting up contingency plans for avian flu pandemic, Chow said that Hong Kong and the Mainland plan to hold a cross border drill for the prevention of avian flu as there is no border for the outbreak of infectious diseases. But the time and detail of the drill is yet to be confirmed.

Chow also said that according to recent analysis by experts, some cases of human contracting H5N1 avian flu found in the world showed that the virus does not only invade the respiratory system but also other organs of the patients.

He said it is necessary to stock pile different kinds of drugs to cope with the needs rather than just stick to the kind that is mostly used by doctors at present for curing avian flu which can only help relieve respiratory symptoms.

Besides, Chow mentioned that in some cases of human contracting avian flu happened in the recent few months, the patients had not contacted with poultries before they got infected. Therefore, all should pay attention that there might be other routes of catching the virus.

What exactly does this mean? Is this H2H, or are there other vectors?

Re: HK, Mainland plan to hold cross border avian flu drill: official

This sounds like additional vectors. I have long wondered if the human cases publicised by China have been designed to point the rest of the world towards the evidence that there is an additional vector to be concerned about. In this way China would not have to admit to prior knowledge of other cases.

I am placing bets on water - pure speculation, so mods if this does not belong here please delete.

Re: HK, Mainland plan to hold cross border avian flu drill: official

Thank you for pointing out water as a possible vector, ever since Vietnamese children got sick while bathing in ponds, this was suspected. If I am not mistaking Doctor Niman has risen this possibility in 2003.

So now I will try to find out particularly in the M?kong Delta if there was any reported cases of diseases or deaths among the fishes,

Re: HK, Mainland plan to hold cross border avian flu drill: official

Water is a definite possibility. We already knew the virus remained viable over an entire winter in frozen arctic ponds. The latest release that the virus has changed to a more viable strain and can remain infective for as long as 6 days on home surfaces and even longer on wet surfaces, clinches the matter for me. Avoid ponds at all costs. And even more importantly, if you are reduced to gathering drinking water from surface water then you must boil or filter and chlorinate before using.

and the water turned to blood....

people who recycle grey or brown water could have a problem.

Americans have moved to short-cycle, cold-water washes to save energy and wear and tear on clothing, but this leaves viruses and bacteria largely intact.

"Water at 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) will sanitize laundry," Gerba said. But only 5 percent of Americans use hot water for laundry.

And viruses such as hepatitis A, rotavirus and bacteria such as Salmonella -- all of which cause stomach upsets and diarrhea -- can easily survive the average 28-minute drying cycle.
These are all carried fecally. "There is about a 10th of a gram of feces in the average pair of underwear," Gerba says. "You don't want to be doing your handkerchiefs with your underwear."
