Man ill with Chikungunya fever

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed a Chikungunya fever case involving a 69-year-old man who fell ill after visiting Indonesia, bringing the year's total to two.

He returned March 3 and developed fever, chills, rigor and joint pain on the follwing day. He was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital March 5 to 11 and has recovered.

Laboratory tests confirmed he was infected by the Chikungunya virus. The centre is following up on the condition of his travel companions.

Chikungunya virus is transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes. Some patients develop a rash. The illness will usually subside without treatment and lasts up to 10 days, although joint pain can last from weeks to months. The incubation period is one to 12 days.
