INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) ? The Indiana State Department of Health says an HIV outbreak is inundating the southern part of the state.

Twenty-six cases of HIV have been reported in five southern counties since mid-December. The counties are Clark, Jackson, Perry, Scott, and Washington.

The state says it?s stemming from an increase in injection drug use. But those who work in this everyday say this isn?t an outbreak at all...

The HIV outbreak announced by State health officials Wednesday continues to grow, now reaching 27 confirmed cases and 10 preliminary HIV positive cases. All cases are linked to injection drug abuse of the prescription drug, opana, with some individuals also reporting sexual intercourse as a possible mode of transmission. Opana is a powerful opioid painkiller containing oxymorphone. State and local health officials are following up on known contacts in Scott, Clark, Jackson, Perry and Washington counties...

Throughout the city of Austin in southeastern Indiana, signs advertise free HIV testing at the Scott County Health Department.

Boarded-up windows decorate nearby houses; metal cages surround air conditioners to bar people from stealing parts to scrap for change. Austin has no drug rehabilitation facility, much less a grocery store.

It?s also the epicenter of the worst HIV outbreak in Indiana history...

INDIANAPOLIS ? Indiana's governor authorized a short-term needle-exchange program and other steps Thursday to help contain the spread of HIV in a county tied to 79 new infections since January, all of them linked to intravenous drug use.

Gov. Mike Pence issued an executive order declaring a public health emergency in the Midwestern state's Scott County. He ordered the state health department to set up a command centre to co-ordinate HIV and substance-abuse treatment and establish a mobile unit to enrol people in a state-run health program.

Most of the infections involve people who shared a syringe while injecting a liquid form of the prescription painkiller Opana, according to state epidemiologist Pam Pontones...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Health officials in Scott County, Indiana said Tuesday there are eight more confirmed cases of HIV in the area.

The State Deputy Health Commissioner says there is now a total of 89 HIV cases in Scott County...

(CNN) -- The number of new HIV infections in a rural Indiana county has grown, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The institute is working with state health leaders to control the "severe outbreak," which has spread among users of a prescription opioid called Opana.

The outbreak has been ongoing since mid-December. As of Friday, 142 people have tested positive for HIV, with 136 confirmed cases and six more with preliminary positive test results, all in rural Scott and Jackson counties. This is a huge number of cases for an area that has a population of only a few thousand people...

Although, officials report that the amount of new cases continues to drop each week. INDIANAPOLIS (August 29, 2015) ? State health officials say the largest HIV outbreak in Indiana history has now topped 180 cases.

The State Department of Health said Friday the southern Indiana outbreak has reached 181 cases, with 177 confirmed cases and four preliminary positives.

The outbreak had 175 cases in late July. The six new cases were reported during the past two weeks among individuals linked to people previously infected in the outbreak...

A Year After Outbreak, Indiana County Still Struggles With HIV, Drugs

It?s been a year since the Indiana State Department of Health declared a public health emergency in Scott County, Indiana, after dozens of people were diagnosed HIV-positive. The outbreak was related to intravenous use of a drug called Opana.

The number of confirmed HIV cases in the county is nearly 200, including 16 new cases since July.
