- No HPAI infection was found during 2 years and 4 months of regular AI surveillance since August 2008, but there were 53 HPAI outbreaks in poultry (29 December 2010-16 May 2011) after the immediate notification of the disease event in wild birds that started on 29 November 2010.
- In response, disease control measures including depopulation and disinfection were conducted on 6,472,711 birds (3,364,696 chickens, 2,788,388 ducks, 298,520 quails, 21,107 other birds) in 286 poultry farms consisting of 53 HPAI infected farms, 267 farms located within 500m (some cases 3km) from the infected premises and 34 epidemiologically relevant farms.
- In addition, we have conducted AI surveillance tests on 1,629 farms (149,165 samples), 96 wet markets (10,708 samples) and 51 places where wild birds and excrement were captured (750 samples) and found no HPAI (H5N1) and LPAI (H5, H7) virus during 3 months period (23 May 2011 to 23 August 2011) since disease control measures were taken on the latest infected area.
- Therefore, the Republic of Korea is hereby declaring regaining its highly pathogenic notifiable avian influenza free country status in accordance with Chapter 10.4.4 of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code starting from 23 August 2011.
