Hepatitis A is on the rise in Italy: Lazio, Campania, and Puglia are the regions with the most cases.

Hepatitis A cases are "on the rise" in Italy, while hepatitis B and C cases are declining, and hepatitis E cases are on the rise. This is the trend captured in the bulletin from the Seieva surveillance system coordinated by the Italian National Institute of Health, published today, which also focuses on the ongoing hepatitis A outbreak, particularly in Campania. But that's not all: "The epidemic situation described," the ISS reports, "is fueled primarily by the peaks recorded in three regions: Lazio, Campania, and Puglia."
In 2025, the institute reports, an increase in the number of hepatitis A cases was observed compared to the previous year: 631 cases were reported compared to 443 in 2024. In 2025, the peak number of cases was reached in September, with 89 reports, after which a slight decline was observed until December. However, in the first three months of 2026, a further increase in reported cases was observed, with a peak observed in March, the month in which 160 cases reported the onset of symptoms (unconsolidated data). The analysis of risk factors – the ISS specifies – highlights how the increase in cases observed in 2026 is mainly driven by the consumption of seafood: 262 cases in the first 3 months of 2026 report this exposure, compared to 43 cases in the same period in 2024. Another factor highlighted by the data is the increase in cases related to sexual transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM), an increase that is particularly evident in 2025 (101 cases in 2025, 23,1%, and 26 between January and March 2026, 11,1%).
In recent weeks, there has been an increase in hepatitis A cases, especially in the Campania region (110 total cases since the beginning of the year as of March 17), according to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), which is actively participating in response and mitigation activities through the centers and departments involved (Infectious Diseases, Food Safety, National Center for Global Health, National Center for Water Safety). The Ministry of Health has established a working group that includes Office 2 Dgeme and Office 8 Dgisa of the ministry, the ISS, the Prevention, Epidemiology and Food Safety Services of the Lazio, Campania, Puglia and Lombardy regions, and the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Southern Italy.
