HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - The doors at Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School will be closed until Monday. This comes after more than 130 students and faculty have recently been absent due to strep throat and the flu virus.
"On Monday my throat was hurting really bad," said student, Zachary Davis. "I had a horrible cough."
"I kept Grace home today because she probably could have come this morning," said Zachary's mother, Marcia Davis. "She didn't have a fever and was fine but I knew that she was probably getting sick and would make the rest of her class sick."
Davis has three children who attend school at Our Lady of Lourdes. Two of the three have missed school this week alone because of flu-like symptoms. She feels the closure is necessary to keep other children from catching the virus.
"I think that if they really get in here and really clean the school up with the bleach and I'm sure that they have the specific type of guidelines they have to follow that the school will be clean," added Davis.
Thursday and Friday, while students and faculty are out, a cleaning crew will disinfect the whole school. Administrators ask that you keep your child at home until they have been fever free for at least 24 hours. School will resume as normal Monday morning.
