Hemsworth child suffering from swine flu dies
07 October 2009
By Rebecca Whittington
A CHILD thought to be from Hemsworth who was suffering from swine flu has died.
The details of the tragedy are not yet known, but Dr Andrew Furber, director of public health at NHS Wakefield District said the child had also been suffering from serious underlying health issues.
He said: "We can confirm that a child has sadly
died. Although the cause of death has not yet been established, tests have shown that the child did have swine flu. The child also had serious underlying health issues. This is a tragic case and our thoughts are with their family at this time."
He said advice to those suffering from swine flu-like symptoms remained the same, adding: "It's important to remember that for the majority of people swine flu remains a mild illness, however if you think you have swine flu and do have underlying health concerns or if you are pregnant or have a child under one with symptoms it is still wise to contact your GP for advice.
"For those diagnosed with swine flu you should remain at home until you stop showing symptoms of the disease, which can be up to seven days. If you find you are not getting any better you should contact your GP for advice.
"You can also help reduce the spread of the virus by always carrying tissues, covering coughs and sneezes, throwing used tissues in a bin and always cleaning your hands."
If you have swine flu-like symptoms in the first instance call the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1513 100.
