Machilipatnam: Intense heat wave has taken a heavy toll in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district, where 22 people have died due to sunstroke since late last month, officials said on Monday. Most of the victims were agricultural labourers.

Twenty-two people have succumbed to sunstroke in various mandals of the district between May 24 and June 1, Collector SAM Rizvee said, quoting reports reaching the district headquarter Machilipatnam, about 350km from Hyderabad.

Amritsar: Three more deaths were reported due to heath stroke in Amritsar today, taking the toll in the holy city and its adjoining areas to six during this summer season. A woman pilgrim was found dead at the Golden Temple yesterday whereas the body of another victim was found from Bhushanpura area. A resident of Abadi Guru Nanak Nagar, too, had succumbed to heat stroke a few days ago. Another victim was identified as Udaybhan Singh of Paschim Puri in New Delhi. His body was found in the area near India Gate police post. One more heat-related death was reported at Sathiala village in Beas area. At least 32 people have died of heatwave in three districts of southern Bengal in the past two days, officials said.

"Twenty-seven people died in areas near Asansol due to intense heatwave prevailing in the area. Thirty others, including 3 policemen, were admitted in hospital after they fell sick due to heatwave," Dr Nikhil Chandra Das, Superintendent of Asansol Sub-Divisional Hospital, said.

Five people died in Asansol yesterday with the temperature in mining and industrial areas running more than 43 degrees Celsius for the past couple of days, he said.

Three others ...died of heatstroke in Hoogly district, health department officials said.

An intense heat wave condition weeping across Odisha has virtually made the state a boiling hot bed with mercury rising over 46 degree Celsius at five places while seven districts showing a day temperature hovering over 45 degree Celsius. The state Capital Bhubaneswar broke the 40 years old record today with the day temperature remaining 46.7 degree Celsius. The city had last witnessed day's temperature touching 46.5 degree Celsius on May 22, 1972. Mercury today shot up to 47.3 degree Celsius, highest in the current summer, in the industrial belt of Talcher, which become one of the hottest spots in the country today.

KOLKATA: The relentless heat killed 67 more people across West Bengal on Tuesday, six of them in Kolkata, pushing up the death toll to 86 in just two days. Five prize horses also died despite water and ice therapy. The Met department has warned that it will get worse as the wait for the monsoon stretches to mid-June.

This is perhaps the highest number of heat-related deaths in the state in decades. It doesn't matter if you are 18 and fit as a fiddle or 70 and ailing. The heat has spared none.

KOLKATA: Heat wave caused over 100 deaths in Bengal in this week. Eight deaths were reported on Wednesday. In Bengal majority of deaths were reported from Asansol -Durgapur belt.

There had been 43 deaths from Durgapur and Asansol belt of Burdwan. Asansol and Durgapur is having a temperature of 47 degree Celsius. Even Midnapore (west) is having a temperature of around 44 degree celsius. Midnapore (west) recorded 18 deaths and similarly Purulia had 18 deaths, where the temperature is hovering over 46 degree.

However, the health officials are not ready to accept the death toll as high as 100, as they said that many of the people died due to old age and even some had other illness. Without a post mortem it is difficult to ascertain the number of deaths due to heat stroke. But health officials felt that the high discomfort index and high temperature is triggering deaths.

Suresh Thakur said the sergeant major of Nawada district, police Nadiriganj Akauna the last fifteen days before the resident Harendra Prasad Begusarai had contributed to the police line. Wednesday evening, his condition suddenly worsened. Facial - were hurriedly rushed to the Civil hospital for treatment. Died in the treatment order. Singh SP Kshtranil receiving event information to assess the situation had reached the Civil Hospital. Asked by Harendra Prasad Yadav, the SP said the death was heat stroke. Kin of the deceased have been notified of this.

KOLKATA: Parched Kolkata woke up to a morning drizzle and a welcome cloud cover on Thursday. As fingers were crossed and prayers sent up for more showers, the Sun broke through the clouds, ushering in yet another scorching afternoon. Relief was round the corner, though. A squall with heavy rain hit Kolkata around 6.15pm, pulling the mercury down and lowering the stifling humidity.

Of the six casualties on Thursday, three deaths were reported from Durgapur and the deceased are yet to be identified. They were found dead on the streets. Sources said while two persons died in Murshidabad, one collapsed in North 24-Parganas. Temperature in Durgapur remained above 45 degree Celsius and it's still waiting for rain. there has not been any rain yet.

Asansol, which has so far recorded over 30 heat-related deaths, cooled down after showers on Wednesday and Thursday.

"We are trying to find out whether the deaths were caused by the heat or occurred due to cardiovascular arrests," Asit Biswas, a health department spokesperson said. He, however, refused to give the exact figure of death toll. But unofficial figures have put the toll at over 120 this week.

Hyderabad: Since April, 250 people have died in Andhra Pradesh because of the heat, according to local officials.

The heat wave in the state this year has seen the maximum temperature hit 49 degrees(120F) in areas like the Guntur district. The arrival of the monsoon in Kerala has brought minor relief, lowering the temperature here to 46 degrees in the last two days.

The weather office says heat wave conditions prevailed for about 10 days in the Telangana and coastal belts of the state. Rayalaseema, the third major region in Andhra Pradesh, was spared.

71 people have died in the Vishakhapatnam district, which has been the worst-affected.

Lucknow: The unabated heat wave in Uttar Pradesh has claimed 16 lives since Sunday, officials said.

At least 11 people died of extreme heat conditions in the parched Bundelkhand area, two in Barabanki and three in Lucknow.
