Bhubaneswar, Apr 12 (PTI) As the heatwave gripped most parts of Orissa, the death toll due to suspected sun stroke rose to 37 today though some areas in coastal belt experienced slight respite following fall in temperature.

The death toll due to suspected heat stroke, which stood at 28 till Friday, rose to 37 following nine fresh casualties from districts like Cuttack, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur, official sources said.

Highest number of sun stroke deaths was reported from Cuttack and Mayurbhanj (five each), followed by four in Keonjhar, three each in Ganjam, Sambalpur and Jajpur, two each in Angul, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Khurda and one each in Balasore, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda, Nayagarh, Puri and Sundargarh.

As heatwave continued in western Orissa, Titlagarh recorded maximum temperature of 45.2 degree Celsius, followed by 44.8 degree in Balangir, 44.5 degree in Sambalpur, 44.4 degree in Hirakud, 44 degree in Sundargarh and 43.

Bhubaneswar, Apr 14 (PTI) The death toll due to sunstroke today mounted to 45 in Orissa as the heatwave conditions continued to prevail.

The sunstroke death toll, which was 42 yesterday, rose to 45 following one death each in Angul, Bargarh and Khurda districts, officials said.

The highest number of sun stroke deaths were reported from Cuttack and Mayurbhanj districts (six each).

The worst affected is the western part of the state where the mercury touched 45.5 degree celsius at Sambalpur and Titlagarh areas.

Hirakud and Balangir recorded a maximum temperature of 44.9 degree C each followed by 44.6 at Jharsuguda, Met office said, adding most of the districts recorded day temperature above 41 degree.

Bhubaneswar, Apr 15 (PTI) With three more deaths, the sunstroke toll today mounted to 48 in Orissa as the western and interior districts continued to reel under heat wave.

The three deaths were reported from Ganjam (2) and Dhenkanal (1) districts, officials said.

The worst affected area is the western part of the state where the mercury touched 45 degree celsius at Balangir. The maximum temperature was 44.6 degree C, 44.1 C and 44 C at Jharsuguda, Hirakud and Sambalpur respectively, Met office said.

However, state capital Bhubaneswar registered a fall in temperature to 38.4 degree C against yesterday's 40.5.

Orissa schools asked to close as heat toll mounts to 53

Bhubaneswar, Apr 16 (PTI) With the toll due to sunstroke in the fortnight-long heatwave in Orissa mounting to 53, the state government today directed all schools to close from April 20, official sources said.

All schools managed either by the government or private bodies were asked to close schools from Tuesday in view of the rising temperature, the notification issued by the School and Mass Education department said.

"The instructions were issued to all schools including private, public and English Medium schools," said a senior official of the department.

The toll, which was 50 yesterday, increased to 53 today with two cases reported from Sundargarh and one from Mayurbhanj, the sources said.

It was sizzling in the western part of the state with the mercury touching 44 degree celsius at Jharsuguda, Sundargarh and the Talcher coal belt.

Bhubaneswar: A large number of birds were found dead at Baripada as Orissa reeled under heatwave conditions with the mercury touching 47.1 degree celsius at Talcher, the highest ever temperature recorded in the state this month.

While the suspected sunstroke death toll remained at 53, a large number of birds (mostly bats)(??) were found dead at Gandhi Park in Baripada which recorded 46 degree celsius.


Official reports of bird deaths also poured in from some other parts of Mayurbhanj as well as Keonjhar and other forested districts.

Almost all the 30 districts of the state experienced temperature about four degree C above normal, a Met official said, adding that the state capital recorded 42.4 degree C against yesterday's 38.5. Similarly, Cuttack, which recorded 37.4 degree C yesterday, registered 43.3 degree C.

Normal life was affected in many places as people were forced to remain indoors due to the unbearable heat. In western Orissa, there was no respite from the scorching heat as well, with the temperature soaring above 44 degree C in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Hirakud, Titlagarh, Balangir, Sundargarh and Angul.

Even coastal Balasore recorded a maximum of 45 C.

However, coastal towns Puri and Paradip were among cool places in the state with recording of 31.3 and 31.2 degree C respectively, reports said.

The met office forecast continuance of heatwave condition in the state for the next 48 hours.

Bhubaneswar, Apr 21 (PTI) With six more deaths reported, the death toll due to suspected sunstroke mounted to 59 in Orissa today even as the state continued to sizzle under searing heat.

The reports of fresh casualties came from Dhenkanal, Nuapada, Sambalpur and Ganjam districts, official said.

Talcher coal belt recorded the maximum temperature of 46.2 degree Celsius. Elsewhere also, mercury hovered around 45 degree Celsius forcing people to remain outdoors.

Sambalpur recorded a maximum temperature of 45.6 deg C followed by Baripada at 45.3 deg C, Jharsuguda 45.2 deg C and 45 deg C in Titlagarh, the officials said.

In Bhubhaneswar, the maximum temperature dropped to 39.9 deg C from yesterday's 42.4 deg C, while in Cuttack the mercury level fell to 39 deg C from 43.3 deg C, they said.

The met office forecast continuance of heatwave condition tomorrow.
