Tasmania has recorded its first measles case in nearly three years, with health authorities urging people who visited specific Hobart locations last week to watch for symptoms.

An infected person was admitted to the Royal Hobart Hospital on Saturday after arriving in the city from Brisbane five days earlier.

The case marks Tasmania’s first confirmed measles infection since February 2023.

The individual travelled on Virgin flight VA1006 from Brisbane to Hobart on Monday evening, spending time at the airport, a city hostel and several retail locations before developing symptoms.​..

A teenager has tested positive for measles in southern Tasmania, marking the state’s second case in less than three weeks.

The Department of Health confirmed the case on Tuesday evening after the young person returned a positive test earlier in the day.

The teenager is now isolating and recovering at home, the department said.

Health authorities are tracing the case’s movements while they were infectious, with exposure sites identified in the Huon Valley and Channel areas south of Hobart.

The department said there were currently “no known links” to other measles cases and the source of the infection remains unknown.​..

​...The person lives in Southern Tasmania and spent time in the Huon Valley and Channel areas while infectious. Department of Health is working to contact those who have had known exposure.

Third measles case confirmed in Tasmania as new exposure sites are revealed
Tasmania health authorities have confirmed a third measles case this year, urging residents to check vaccination status after exposures at popular Huonville locations.

A third case of measles in Southern Tasmania for this year was confirmed on Monday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Department of Health is urging Tasmanians to be alert for symptoms of the contagious disease.

Department of Health specialist medical adviser for public health services Dr Laura Edwards said the latest case was linked to a recent measles case and was isolating and recovering at home.

The latest exposure sites are Huonville’s Woolworths complex on Friday December 5 between 5.15-6.30pm, scout camp including Franklin/Huon Rowing Club on the evenings of December 5-7 and Petstock Country Huonville on Friday 19, December between 12.45-1.45pm.
