Health team to assess remote community

June 21, 2009 - 3:19PM

Neighbours of Australia's first swine flu fatality will be tested for the virus on Tuesday.

A team of West Australian health staff will travel to the remote Aboriginal community of Kiwirrkurra, a WA health spokeswoman said on Sunday.

A 26-year-old man from the community near the Northern Territory border died in Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) on Friday, the day after he was diagnosed with the A(H1N1) virus.

The spokeswoman said a local nurse had informed the health department the community of about 300 people had not experienced any increase in influenza-like illnesses.

"It looks like our public health team will head out there on Tuesday," the spokeswoman said.

"We won't know a lot more until then."

On Saturday, Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon called for calm, saying it was still unclear whether the virus or another illness killed the man.

She said while it was Australia's first recorded death of a swine flu victim, the virus may have been only a contributing factor.

Health authorities said on Saturday there were 140 confirmed cases of swine flu in WA, but none of them was being treated in hospital.
