DOH encourages flu and Covid-19 vaccines as respiratory virus activity increases in Hawaii

  • Oct 6, 2026
HONOLULU (Island News) -- The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) is encouraging residents to stay up to date on vaccines for influenza, Covid-19 and other respiratory viruses in response to increases in respiratory virus activity across the state.

Recent DOH surveillance has shown an increase in influenza activity with 20.3% of respiratory specimens testing positive for influenza. These results were recorded during the week of Sept. 23 to 30, 2026 — up from the previous week. DOH reported that Covid-19 cases have begun to decrease, based on its statewide surveillance systems.

“Respiratory viruses circulate year-round in Hawaii and we are seeing increased activity as we enter the fall respiratory virus season,” said Hawaii State Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Kemble. “Getting recommended vaccines, staying home when you are sick and taking simple precautions around others can help reduce the spread of illness and protect people who are more vulnerable to severe disease.”
