Two clusters of influenza-like illness activity have been reported to HDOH during week 46, 2010. Specimens are currently being collected and forwarded to SLD for influenza testing.

Since the beginning of the 2010-11 influenza season (MMWR week 40, 2010), a total of 1,447 specimens have been tested statewide for influenza viruses. Altogether, a total of 70 (4.8%) cases of influenza A, and 29 (2.0%) cases of influenza B were detected using any method. Of the influenza A cases detected, 11 (15.7%) were 2009 H1N1, 10 (14.3%) were influenza A(H3), and the remaining (N = 49, 70%) were influenza A of unknown subtype.

Nearly 100% positive specimens for influenza in week 6. Since week 5, the majority of subtyped specimens were A(2009 H1N1)
Of the 23.1% of specimens that did test positive for influenza, more were likely to be aged 5-24 years than in any other age group.

In reference to the figure below, the Week 7 Hawaii reports states the following:

Pneumonia and Influenza (P&I) Related Mortality:
During week 7 of the 2010-11 influenza season, 12.9% (95% CI 4.6-21.2%) of all deaths in Honolulu, Hawai‘i were due to pneumonia or influenza. This P&I was comparable to the historical P&I baseline in Hawai‘i for week 7. Honolulu P&I mortality for week 7 was also comparable to the epidemic threshold (8.3%) and national P&I mortality (8.0%).

Call me crazy, but neither the values provided (P&I deaths at 12.9%), nor the chart suggest to me that P&I deaths are "comparable to" the historical data for Hawaii or the national epidemic threshold. That is, unless they mean by "are comparable to" to say that the values can simply be compared with one another, as could any two numbers.

It looks to me like there have been quite a few excess P&I deaths in Hawaii, and, based on past experience, the state is very reluctant to post or otherwise provide data related to influenza. Perhaps it is fear of losing revenue from tourism, but the P&I data suggest that severe cases of flu are as prevalent in Hawaii as any place in the U.S.

~23% positive for influenza (majority A unsubtyped) NOTE: Week 6 was the last time HI subtyped. At that time, nearly 60% specimens were positive for influenza, with the majority A/2009 H1N1)

Despite the commentary associated with the graph, Hawaii has experienced significantly higher P&I deaths this spring than their previous 3-yr average, the U.S. levels, and the national baseline. They have only released updates every 1 to 2 months and it is nearly impossible to get data from the health department - even when calling. I suppose they are very concerned about potential impacts on tourism.
