Earlier this month, tests of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology showed water from Dong Da District’s Linh Quang Lake contained many harmful bacteria including Vibrio cholerae - the cause of the cholera disease.
Hanoi’s Health Preventive Department immediately sterilized Linh Quang Lake water with more than one ton of Cloramin B.
Linh Quang Lake is one of 31 bodies of water the Hanoi administration ordered dredged after the latest cases of cholera were confirmed.
From the beginning of March to April 9, about 1,000 people from 16 provinces and cities across Vietnam have been hospitalized with acute diarrhea, according to Ministry of Health statistics.
Of those hospitalized, 122 patients tested positive for cholera, with 44 cases reported in Hanoi alone.
Six of the 44 patients in Hanoi live near Linh Quang Lake.
The 2,000 people who live and run businesses around the three-hectare lake discharge a variety of waste into the lake.
Earlier this month, the Van Chuong Ward People’s Committee suspended 15 food stalls from the Linh Quang Lake area after finding they failed to comply with hygiene regulations.
Van Chuong authorities said 2,000 Linh Quang Lake locals were given cholera prevention drugs last week.
Prevent outbreak in HCMC
While the acute diarrhea outbreak has occurred mainly in northern localities, a new case of cholera was reported in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.
Nguyen Thi Moi, 71, tested positive for the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and she is now under the care of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, HCMC Department of Health said Wednesday.
The city’s health agencies sterilized the area where Moi lives and are investigating the source of infection.
Moi said she began suffering diarrhea after eating food from a street vendor.
A representative from the Health Department, Phan Van Nghiem, said the source of Moi’s cholera infection had not yet been identified.
Two people from the boarding house where Moi lives had recently visited Nam Dinh Province, one of the localities hit by the diarrhea outbreak, Nghiem said.
Moi’s daughter had also had diarrhea before Moi was hospitalized.
Moi’s daughter and the two people who visited Nam Dinh will be tested by health authorities as part of the investigation into the source of Moi’s infection.
Another HCMC acute diarrhea patient, 16-year-old Ly Do Quoc T., tested negative for a cholera infection, according to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases’ results released Thursday.
The city’s health agencies advised people to maintain the highest standards of hygiene when eating and drinking.
Authorities also warned against eat shrimp paste at the moment.
In a note to the city’s administration, the HCMC Department of Health suggested patients who test positive for cholera be treated free of charge.
At a meeting about the acute diarrhea outbreak in Hanoi on Wednesday, Health Minister Nguyen Quoc Trieu warned the disease could spread to more localities.
Eating unhygienic food was the main reason for infection, Trieu said.
In December last year, the Ministry of Health announced a 40-day acute diarrhea epidemic in 13 northern localities had been controlled.
During that outbreak 1,991 cases were reported, of which 295 tested positive for cholera.:tiphat:
