St. Joe?s reports 12th C. diff-related death

Another patient with C. difficile at St. Joseph?s hospital has died, bringing the number of deaths during the current outbreak to 12.

While there were no new cases to report Monday, and the hospital believes the situation is improving, the death comes on the heels of the death of a 91-year-old woman on Thursday. Only one death so far has been directly attributed to C. diff, but eight remain under investigation.

The total number of C. diff cases rose to 83 late last week ? 51 cases in which the infection was acquired at the hospital and 32 who came in with it...

Hospital baffled by unexpected increase in C. diff cases

St. Joseph?s hospital officials are trying to figure out why they are still seeing more cases of C. difficile at a time when they were expecting new cases in the outbreak to decrease.

?We?ve been working on it,? said St. Joe?s president Dr. David Higgins. ?It?s a concern to us all ? we have to figure out why.?

After seeing the number of new cases go down significantly in December, the hospital started the first five days of January with five new cases in which the C. difficile was acquired while the patients were in hospital...

An outbreak of the superbug C. difficile was declared over Friday at St. Joseph?s Healthcare, where 16 infected patients died in a 3? month surge of more than 100 cases.

The hospital revised its C. diff patient death total to 16 from 14 Friday, part of an ongoing mortality review. Officials look closely at the death of any infected patient to try to determine whether C. diff caused the death, contributed to the death or had no impact.

Six of the deaths have been confirmed ?to be related? to C. diff, the hospital said.

Two deaths were found not to be related to the C. diff infection that the patients carried at the time they passed away. Eight deaths are still under investigation.

?There?s no doubt this was a major outbreak, the biggest we?ve had in Hamilton by far,? said Dr. Chris Mackie, an associate medical officer of health for Hamilton. ?As a comparison, the H1N1 pandemic killed eight people in Hamilton...?
