St. Joseph?s Hospital has expanded its antibiotic stewardship program to all antibodies prescribed to patients in the wake of a second serious C. difficile outbreak that is linked to the death of four elderly patients.

The hospital had only looked at the use of high-risk antibodies believed to cause C. diff after a 2009 outbreak that killed seven elderly patients, but has decided to look at all antibody prescriptions and has appointed a pharmacist to solely handle the stewardship program...

St. Joe's C. difficile outbreak continues, but fewer new cases are emerging daily according to hospital officials.

The improvement is likely due to new hospital measures, they say.

Although the count since the outbreak started Oct. 1 is up to 75 cases ? 26 of them already infected before coming to hospital ? new cases seem to be on the decline. So far this month, the hospital has had eight new cases ? ? one of them on Wednesday.

Nine people with C. difficile have now died, including one on Wednesday. C. diff caused one death, was ruled out in another, and is being investigated in the other seven...

* Thu Dec 16 2010

St. Joseph?s hospital is using cutting edge measures to bring its C. difficile outbreak under control, according to infectious disease control expert Dr. Michael Gardam.

Gardam said the new lab test St. Joe?s instituted during the outbreak is the gold standard, but is rarely used in Ontario hospitals because it is costly and requires certain expertise to perform. He predicts all hospitals will have it in 20 years, but right now ?it?s still pretty cutting edge.?

The hospital is also at the forefront in instituting a full-time oversight of antibiotics prescribed in St. Joe?s, he said.

?We know there?s a lot of overuse of antibiotics and antibiotics are one of the major reasons people develop C. difficile.?

Having better stewardship of antibiotic prescriptions is a major area where hospitals can improve, he said. Studies have shown that over 50 per cent of the antibiotics prescribed don?t need to be used, he added.

Since the start of the outbreak Oct. 1, St. Joe?s has had 76 cases of C. difficile, including a new one identified on Thursday...

Elderly woman?s death at St. Joe?s linked to C. diff outbreak

A 91-year-old woman has died of C. difficile complications at St. Joseph?s Hospital.

Hedwig Knox?s death at the Charlton Avenue East facility comes as an outbreak of the infection appeared to be easing in the last few weeks.

Knox died Thursday after what her family said was a lengthy struggle with C. difficile. Her death brings to 11 the number of people who have now died since the outbreak began in October.

The total number of C. difficile cases has risen to 83 ? 51 who are suspected of getting the infection at the hospital and 32 who got it from a non-hospital circumstance.

While 11 people with C. difficile have died, one death has been found to be caused by other factors and eight remain under investigation.

Since Dec. 24, there had been only two new cases, bringing the total to 10 for December. A medical facility can normally expect five cases per month...
