Juravinski controlling C. diff outbreak

Juravinski Hospital has implemented C. difficile outbreak measures in one of its units, after an outbreak affecting six patients was declared June 17.

None of those patients remain in the affected unit — four are in other areas of the hospital, one has been transferred to Brantford and one has died, though not from C. diff.

The transferred patient did not develop symptoms until after arriving in Brantford.

There was “not a particular reason” the hospital waited five days to notify the public about the outbreak, said Hamilton Health Sciences spokesperson Heather Pullen, adding that it has been an evolving situation.

Legislation does not mandate hospitals notify the public about outbreaks of the infection, rather they do report to public health and disclose some numbers through the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care website.

The patients were diagnosed between June 6 and June 10, Pullen said. All were treated in the F3 medicine unit.

As per legislation they began consulting with public health after the third patient was diagnosed. No new cases have been diagnosed since June 10.

The hospital is taking special precautions to contain the outbreak, including ramping up its cleaning to include an anti-sporicide...
