A mysterious plague recalling the symptoms of cholera has been raging for two weeks in the villages of Bois Neuf and Williamson Arcahaie (about 50 miles north of Port-au-Prince) where at least nine deaths and 17 hospitalizations have been recorded, said Tuesday at Radio Kiskeya the responsible communication of the local civil defense, René Wilner.

In people, the disease is characterized by severe diarrhea, vomiting and swelling of the neck. These events sometimes cause death within hours, even if the patient is taken care of medically, says Mr. René. He called for the urgent intervention of health-oriented institutions like the Department of Public Health and the Haitian Red Cross in the affected communities.

Stressing that the diagnosis of doctors showed that this is not a new cholera outbreak, the representative of civil protection in Arcahaie emphasizes the almost total lack of latrines in Bois- nine and Williamson and the inability of the population access to drinking water.

The brilliance of the epidemic worried the highest point in the two locations where people wait for an appropriate response authorities, Wilner says Rene.

And we get independent confirmation that something is going on. Two changes in the report, however:

1. The number of deaths has been reduced from 9 to 1 (although the reference to that sometimes death occurs in hours is a bit odd if there is only one fatality).
2. The swelling in the neck has been changed to a rash on the neck.

This week, Wilner Rene, communications officer of the local Civil Protection in Arcahaie, 50 miles north of Port au Prince, said that a "mysterious" symptoms reminiscent epidemic of cholera prevails for two weeks in two municipalities of the town where there was one death and 17 hospitalizations.

Rene said that the diagnosis of doctors showed that there is not a new outbreak of cholera but other conditions which seek to identify and which appeared in the communities known as Bois-Neuf and Williamson.

"The disease is characterized by severe diarrhea, vomiting and rash on the neck. Sometimes involves the death in a few hours," said the spokesman, who called the central authorities to intervene affected communities.
