Alert | Outbreak of glomerulonephritis in children in Haiti

Gilles Justin 6 hours ago

In a letter addressed to the departmental directors of public health on May 8, 2023, the Laboratory and Research Epidemiology Department (DELR) expressed its concern about an epidemic of glomerulonephritis, a disease characterized by fever and erythematous skin rash in children under 18 years of age .

Since March 2023, this new infection detected in children has raised concerns among health authorities. In a letter signed by Dr. Samson Marseille and addressed to departmental directors and the Director General of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), the DELR reports having received alerts concerning cases of acute glomerulonephritis in children hospitalized in several hospitals such as La Paix University Hospital, Bernard Mevs and Carrefour Hospital.

"Review of the records of these patients shows an initial phase of the disease characterized by fever, tonsillitis and an erythematous rash, consistent with scarlet fever, an infection caused by a hemolytic B streptococcus type A", indicates the document.

The DELR has called for heightened surveillance for rashes and an active institutional search for similar cases since the beginning of March 2023.

Haiti: Inflammation in the face, severe fever, children hit in large numbers

Par Planet Press May 26, 2023

A fever epidemic strikes the country. It mainly affects young children. Severe fever and inflammation in the face are among the first signs of this disease.

Some hospitals are already full of children affected by the said epidemic.

The Ministry of Public Health had informed about cases where children fall ill. But since then the follow-ups have been pending.

The MSPP had mainly explained that this disease is characterized by fever, tonsillitis, erythematous rash, compatible with scarlet fever. This infection caused by bhemolytic streptococcus.

In my neighborhood I have several cases where children have fever. A violent fever that overwhelms the children,” a citizen told the newspaper.

Medical sources have expressed concern. They say they are worried about the number of children received in the centres. Often they arrive in a fairly critical condition.

Members of the population call on the health authorities to act quickly. And this, in order to avoid the worst.
