<!-- phugc -->ST..JOHNS (CBC) - A western Newfoundland woman who runs a school in Haiti says the fallout from last January's earthquake is having a frightening effect on her students.

Karen Huxter said Friday there are two confirmed cases of cholera at the school in Deschapelles, Haiti, which was badly damaged on Jan. 12. She said some of the youngest children there may also be showing symptoms.

"It's not a good situation at all when you have that in school on the school grounds, you're trying to do your best. They're little children, they don't understand," said Huxter...

Huxter said she'd prefer to close the school, but she's waiting for word from the government.

(CNN) -- Medical workers in Haiti on Friday called the upward trend in deaths and illnesses in the cholera outbreak "alarming" as the earthquake-devastated nation's already strained health system overflowed with the sick.

In the slum of Cite Soleil on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, Medicins San Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) had seen 216 cases of cholera at Choscal Hospital. Five days ago, that number was only 30.

Stefano Zannini, the head of mission for Medicins Sans Frontieres, said his staff was seeing seven times the cases they were seeing three days ago.

"The trend is extremely, extremely alarming," he said. "We have not reached a peak yet but it could arrive next week."

The death toll climbed Thursday to 796, according to Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population. More than 12,000 people have been sickened.

The situation in Port-au-Prince and metropolitan area (Port-au-Prince, Carrefour, Cit? Soleil, Delmas, Kenscoff, Petion Ville, Port-au-Prince, Croix des Bouquets and Tabarre) is significantly worse in 24 hours.

The last official assessment of the Ministry of Health (cumulative), dated of November 9, reported 278 cases hospitalized and 10 deaths. 24 hours later, the assessment (cumulative) of November 10 reported 443 cases hospitalized (+ 59.35%) and 13 deaths (+30%), respectively +165 hospitalized cases and +3 deaths between November 9 and 10.

At the national level, where 50% departments are affected by cholera, the results are as follows:

Requests to reconsider measures to prevent cholera outbreak in the country

The director of the Committee on Health Sector Reform, Humberto Salazar, opposed the reopening yesterday of the country market in the Dominican-Haitian border.

The official predicted that the decision would produce an imminent spread of cholera in the Dominican population.

Laslo Salazar advised authorities to reconsider this decision and understand that it involves opening the doors to the disease.

Means that the Dominican authorities should exercise their sovereignty and close the border until in Haiti had cholera control.

He said the welfare of a group of traders and producers who do business on the border can not be above the health of the majority and the country's tourism, which is the backbone of the economy.

He felt that the best solution would be to allow the export of Dominicans to Haiti, the Dominican Republic because there is no cholera or other epidemic.

Bangladeshi cholera experts fly to Haiti

DHAKA - A team of Bangladeshi cholera experts left for Haiti on Saturday to help the quake-ravaged nation fight an epidemic of the water-borne disease, officials said.

The experts are from the renowned International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, which is credited with developing a simple but effective treatment for diarrhoeal diseases worldwide.

The eight-member team consists of clinicians, microbiologists, a medical officer and two Bangladeshi nurses, the centre said.

"Our priority is to train local people so that Haiti's health authorities are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage this, and any future outbreaks," said team leader, Dr R.N. Mazumder.

Cuba provided medical assistance to Haiti for over 10 years, its numbers were increased immediately after the earthquake and there are around 855 Cuban doctors on the ground, part of which is dedicated to the fight against the cholera epidemic .

Despite the active presence on the ground of the Cuban brigade and staff dedicated to the fight against cholera, (118 doctors, 78 nurses and 56 other people - laboratory technicians and medical staff trained in Cuba), plus important human resources of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and Partners in Health, Artibonite and North West have a need for more medical partners on the ground.

This discovery comes one day after the United Nations have estimated that the epidemic of cholera could contaminate up to 200,000 Haitians, and that the cholera can spread throughout the country, whose 6 departments out of 10 are already affected. The last official assessment, reported 14.642 hospitalization and 917 deaths since the epidemic began.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) ? Protesters who hold U.N. soldiers from Nepal responsible for a deadly outbreak of cholera that has killed nearly 1,000 people have barricaded Haiti's second-largest city, burned cars and stoned a peacekeeping base.

The protesters also blame the Nepalese unit there for the death of a Haitian youth at the base in August.

Demonstrations began in Cap-Haitien about 6 a.m. local time and within hours paralyzed much of the northern port city, national television reporter Johnny Joseph told The Associated Press by phone. An AP television cameraman trying to reach the area was repelled late Saturday by protesters throwing rocks and bottles from a barricade.

Protesters have also targeted other U.N. bases and Haitian national police stations in the city. Haitian radio reported a police substation was burned.

U.N. soldiers and Haitian police fired tear gas and projectiles to disperse at least 1,000 protesters at the Nepalese base, Haitian radio reported. At least 12 Haitians have been injured, Radio Metropole reported. There have been no reports of injuries to U.N. personnel or other foreigners.

"We remain very concerned about the volatile situation in Cap-Haitien," U.N. mission spokesman Vincenzo Pugliese said.

He blamed political actors for stoking the unrest. "It looks like the demonstration began in three or four parts in the city in a simultaneous way that means it was planned ahead or organized," he said.

Red Cross responds to cholera outbreak in Haiti

The American Red Cross has drafted a new strategy to attack the onslaught of cholera on Haiti. In the mountainside outside of Petionville, just one team made up of nearly 200 volunteers met face to face with each resident to offer five-minute instructions on the art of hand washing, a simple, but they hope, effective way to slow the spread of the disease, which new estimates forecast could claim 200,000 victims.

"The big concern right now is that there's going to be a major outbreak into Port-Au-Prince. It would be incredibly difficult to contain if that happens," said Julie Sell with the American Red Cross.

In Port-Au-Prince's largest camp, 8,000 people live packed together and are bathing sometimes in the same dirty water, and lacking sufficient clean water to drink. Cholera is spread through water and waste. The Red Cross alone provides 660 gallons of clean water a day.

The government has been slow to admit just how quickly the disease is invading Haiti from its origin in the Artbonite region a several-hours drive away. In fact, two days before the government admitted cholera had been diagnosed in the city we met people who said their friends or loved ones had died from it.

Breece Michel says a child's death was the signal of cholera's arrival in his camp.

"They keep on bringing people here very often. Actually, they bring seven people here and there's one of them who died," Michel said through a translator.

It can take just hours for a child to die from the severe dehydration cholera causes, adults a few hours more.

More alarmingly, the coordinator of humanitarian action for the United Nations, said that cases of cholera were reported in the Department of Health and in hospitals . Specifying that the Haitian government, must now treat new aspects of the epidemic, such as the management of the people deceased of the cholera, the transport of their body and the transport of the sick people towards sites of treatment, potential sources of infections. Adding that to date no cases of cholera had been reported in refugee camps or living close to 1.5 million people. Failing to refer to suspected cases being confirmed among others in the camp of the Champs de Mars... Government authorities are concerned for their part, that the epidemic reaches the unhealthy camps where refugees are crammed...

It?s a really worrying situation for us at the moment. All of the hospitals in Port-au-Prince are overflowing with patients and we?re seeing seven times the total amount of cases we had three days ago.
In the slum of Cite Soleil, located in the north of the city, yesterday we recorded 216 separate cases of cholera arriving at the hospital, while the total number recorded just 5 days ago was 30. Patients are coming from everywhere, throughout the city, slums and wealthier areas. At the moment we have 400 beds set aside for the stabilization and rehabilitation of patients and we?re hoping to get that up to 1,000 by the end of the week.
But we are really worried about space. If the number of cases continues to increase at the same rate, then we?re going to have to adopt some drastic measures to be able to treat people. We?re going to have to use public spaces and even streets. I can easily see this situation deteriorating to the point where patients are lying in the street, waiting for treatment. At the moment, we just don?t have that many options.

UN Urges Halt to Haiti Violence as Cholera Response Suffers

Haiti violence slows cholera response in Cap Haitien

(Port-au-Prince /New York, 16 November 2010): The humanitarian community in Haiti calls for an immediate end to violent demonstrations in Cap Haitien, which are seriously hampering the humanitarian response to a rapidly escalating cholera outbreak in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the humanitarian community, Humanitarian Coordinator Nigel Fisher said that while supplies in Cap Haitien run low, medical staff are overwhelmed and cholera mortality climbs, the security situation is preventing vital supplies from reaching those there to help.

The Nord Department is currently experiencing a case fatality rate of 7.5% - the highest in Haiti.

'We call upon all involved in these clearly orchestrated demonstrations to stop immediately so national and international partners can continue to save lives with our response to the cholera," said Mr Fisher. "Every day we lose means hospitals go without supplies, patients go untreated and people remain ignorant of the danger they are facing. It is vital that everything possible is done to contain this outbreak in Cap Haitien while we still can - but this is very difficult in the current environment."

So far, the UN has been forced to cancel flights carrying soap, medical supplies and personnel to Cap Haitien and Port de Paix. On the ground, Oxfam reports suspension of a project to chlorinate water for 300,000 people in slum areas, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has halted training of medical staff in cholera response and a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse has been looted of 500 metric tonnes of food and burned. Road blocks set up by demonstrators are also hampering people from getting to hospital.

"We condemn without reservation the attack on the WFP warehouse, and the looting of such life saving supplies," added Mr Fisher. "We call upon all who perpetrate such acts to remember that such supplies and the urgent work to combat cholera are the difference between life and death for everyone affected by this epidemic." The UN is currently coordinating an urgent international appeal for $164 million to fund cholera response in Haiti.

The latest assessment (cumulative) dated of Monday, November 15, 2010 and published today Wednesday by the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) reported 18.382 hospitalization since the beginning of the epidemic, either 1.583 additional cases moreover of the last official assessment of November 14 (+9.42%) and 1.110 death either 76 new additional deaths (+7.35%).

Port au Prince and metropolitan area:
In Port-au-Prince and metropolitan area, (Port-au-Prince: Carrefour, Cit? Soleil, Delmas, Kenscoff, P?tion-Ville, Port-au-Prince, Tabarre and Croix des Bouquets) it reported 953 hospitalization since the first reported case in this area, either 78 cases moreover of the last assessment (Nov.14) (+8.91%) and 46 deaths, either 8 new additional deaths (+21.05%)...
