Re: H7N9, Beijing: An Hebei woman diagnosed with bird flu (Ifeng, July 20 2013)

I find this statement a little concerning

July 19, Chaoyang Hospital for patients with H7N9 avian influenza virus detection, the result is positive, then sending the specimen to CDC, Beijing Review, 20 am Beijing CDC review of the patient H7N9 avian influenza virus nucleic acid positive. July 20 morning, the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau organized expert consultation, combined with the results of the review City CDC, diagnosed the patient with severe human infection of H7N9 avian influenza cases. Merge diagnosis: viral pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, severe sepsis, acute kidney injury, disseminated intravascular coagulation.

A recent trial found that low path H7N9 had respiratory tissue tropism only. Could this case involve a high path mutation which would cause multi-tissue tropism? I hope that they sequence and publish this information.

[The case has been confirmed by Beijing Municipality Health Department (http://www.bjhb.gov.cn/wsxw/201307/t20130720_62841.htm ). Provided that this is an alarming recurrence, the case in not unexpected since the virus is circulating among China Mainland poultry at an unknown extent - although summer season sees less avian influenza viruses activity than in cold weather. No data is available on the situation of large industrial combined poultry farms, where the virus possibly has it roots and there are not OIE reports about serological analysis of these animals or other surveillance activities involving such kind of business. Couple with the summer seasonal influenza peak in Southern China, a rebound of human H7N9 infections aren't unexpected and perhaps warranted. GM]
