The agriculture ministry announced Sunday a suspected outbreak of bird flu that killed at least 1,100 chickens at a farm in Taragi, Kumamoto Prefecture, prompting the prefectural government to order the culling of 112,000 chickens kept there and at another nearby farm run by the same operator.

The ministry also ordered a ban on the shipping or moving of chickens and their eggs within a the 3-km radius of the two farms, and requested that reporters not approach the farms to prevent further spread of the suspected H5-type avian influenza outbreak.

In an apparent bid to ease public concerns, government officials noted in a statement that no cases of bird-to-human bird flu infection through eating chicken meat or eggs have been found in Japan.

TOKYO - Japan has ordered the slaughter of some 112,000 chickens after officials confirmed Sunday bird flu infections at a poultry farm in the south.

DNA tests confirmed the H5 strain of the virus at a farm in Kumamoto prefecture that kept 56,000 birds, after its owner reported Saturday a lot of sudden deaths among his poultry, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

Government will take thorough measures to prevent wider infections

Officials also ordered the culling of another 56,000 birds at a separate farm run by the same owner after treating it as a location of possible infections, the ministry said.

It was the first confirmed outbreak of bird flu in Japan in three years...

- Infection with H5 influenza A virus in poultry was confirmed on 13 April 2014 in Kumamoto prefecture.
- On 12 April 2014, local veterinary officers visited the farm immediately after notification from the owner.
- Increase of the mortality was recognized and the local veterinary service centre in the prefecture (Kumamoto Livestock Hygiene Centre) confirmed that samples from dead birds were influenza A virus positive by antigen-capture kits.
- On the same day, the centre started RT-PCR test and confirmed that the subtype was H5 on 13 April.
- The samples are to be sent to the National Institute of Animal Health for virus isolation and HI test.
- Movement restrictions are imposed on the farms within the radius of 3km of the affected farm.
- Shipment restrictions are imposed on the farms within the radius of 3-10km of the affected farm.
- Stamping-out policy is applied to the affected farm and epidemiologically related farms.
- Destruction of all the susceptible birds in the affected farm and epidemiologically related farms will be completed on 13 April 2014.

The Yomiuri Shimbun KUMAMOTO?The Kumamoto prefectural government has completed the culling of about 112,000 chickens after an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza at a poultry farm in Taragi, Kumamoto Prefecture, was confirmed Sunday. The chickens, which had been kept on two farms operated by the same owner in Taragi and Sagara in the prefecture, were placed into pits at the farms on Tuesday morning, according to the prefecture.

The prefectural government will also place feed and manure from the two farms in pits and bury them with the chickens as epidemic prevention measures on Wednesday...

The avian influenza found in chickens in Kumamoto Prefecture has been identified as the H5N8 virus, the agriculture ministry said Thursday.

The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said it found H5N8 in samples from birds at a farm in Kumamoto where a surge in chicken deaths set off the culling Sunday and Monday of some 112,000 birds.

This is the first discovery of the H5N8 virus in Japan. Cases of suspected H5N8 bird infections have been reported since January in South Korea...

Japan?s bird flu virus has same gene type as South Korea?s

The virus strain that caused bird flu at a poultry farm in Kumamoto Prefecture has been confirmed to be genetically identical to the one found in South Korea, the National Institute of Animal Health said Tuesday.

Genome sequencing conducted by the institute proved the virus strain detected April 13 on the farm in the town of Taragi, Kumamoto Prefecture, was at least 99 percent identical to the virus that has led to widespread infections in South Korea this year.

There is little chance that the virus will directly affect humans, according to the institute.
