H5N2: hotbeds of infection found in Haiti.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

P-au-P., 11 June 08 [AlterPresse] --- The Haitian Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development has announced that June 11 (2008) the discovery of some outbreaks of H5N2 infection in Haiti.

The Ministry but warns against panic among the population.

The H5N2, also known by avian influenza does not spread to humans, unlike H5N1, the most serious form more commonly known as avian influenza or bird flu, said the Ministry of Agriculture.

Outbreaks of infection have been identified particularly in the departments of the Centre, North and Nippes.

In this press conference on June 11, Secretary of State for Public Security announced a strengthening of epidemiological surveillance to prevent any extension of outbreaks of infection.

Officials of the Ministry of Agriculture acknowledged that the control of H5N2, although this is the form not transmissible to humans, may be more difficult in Haiti that neighbouring Republic for example, since the farming system Haiti is in a free and extensive.

The ministry will seek to overcome this problem through joint work and supported with all its national and international partners, says Joanas Gu?.

Despite the discovery of some outbreaks of infection in Haiti, Haitian authorities maintained a ban on import of poultry products Dominicans.

The ban followed the discovery in the Dominican Republic in late December 2007, various outbreaks of H5N2 virus. [vs apr 11/06/08 17:30]

[vs apr 11/06/08 17:30]

Outbreaks of H5N2 virus discovered in Haiti, according to officials
12.06.08 | 04h36

Outbreaks of H5N2 virus, a subtype of the avian influenza virus were discovered in at least four regions in Haiti, said Wednesday evening AFP the Haitian Secretary of State for Agriculture Mr. Joanas Gu?.

"They are hotbeds of infection 'avian influenza', a subtype of the virus, discovered on poultry and fighting cocks, but not harmful to humans or poultry," said M . Gu?.

The secretary of state said that the discovery took place through a system of monitoring outbreaks of infections established in Haiti since cases have been recorded in neighbouring Dominican Republic.

"We have made borrowing more than 2,000 poultry and analyses performed in a reference laboratory to the USA (Ohio) confirmed the existence of sub-type virus," declared the head.

The cases discovered were reported to international bodies including the Fund of the United Nations Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Organization for Animal Health.

"There is no need to panic, everything is under control," reassured the secretary of state who has nonetheless announced the establishment of a cordon sanitaire along the border with the Dominican Republic while the measures' ban on importing poultry products Dominicans will be maintained and strengthened.

Paral?llement, Haitian authorities have announced the establishment in Haiti, notammament in affected regions, an epidemiological surveillance system to monitor the evolution of the virus in the country where no slaughter of animals has been ordered.

Haiti reports bird flu cases, Listin says

SOURCE: listin.com.do

SANTO DOMINGO. – Haiti’s authorities have detected several bird flu outbreaks in at least four regions, although the Agriculture Minister Joanas Gué said it’s a subtype of the H5N2 virus that doesn’t affect humans.

Speaking on radio Métropole yesterday, the official said at least 2,000 birds and fighting roosters were tested by a lab in Ohio, U.S., which confirmed the infection.

Gué said sanitary controls were imposed along the Dominican-Haiti border on Wednesday; measures he said will be reinforced to prevent the entry of poultry products from the neighboring country.

In January Haiti banned Dominican chicken and egg imports after the virus H5N2 was found in cockfighting roosters in Higüey. Puerto Rico had already adopted a similar measure, but lifted it afterwards.

Gué said the virus was detected after Haiti established a monitoring system since Dominican Republic’s first cases were reported in December.
