H5N1 bird flu virus is changing

Re: H5N1 bird flu virus is changing

Dr. Niman, do you have an opinion? You seem to gaze at quite a few sequences.

"All I can say is that the Threonine at position 129 of the PA segment is typically found only in avian isloates, while the Isoleucine is typically only in human ones, and has been in all pandemic viruses this last century. So, it seems that this particular Fujian virus may be beginning to take on human characteristics. Could be a signal."

I know you like "travel logs", so does this virus travel with winged creatures, or has it perhaps found a comfortable home in hosts with hands?

I have to track that one down. I usually focus on the "new" polymorphisms to see where they have been and the search is at the nucleotide level, so I didn't see the change because it sounds like all Fujian isolates have the I?

The results of such query may hold some surprises. It seems that not all viruses are created equal, even those that find mammalian hosts.

Can you be more specific and add some details?

Here is the CDC link showing seasonal flu outbreaks by state. NC is the only state in the US that shows "regional".

I live here in the Raleigh area . Feed back would be good from anyone!!
 Thank you

Welcome to the forum Chiro. :)

Since North Carolina is first, they should be DONE with the flu first also!

Re: H5N1 bird flu virus is changing

we are not assuming, that there is any evolution in mammals yet, are we ? I mean, all H5N1 infecting mammals die after a few generations,
so any "adaption of H5N1 to humans" so far would either die out
after a few generations or just be coincidentally happening in birds.

The travel logs look for donor sequences, and the donor sequences are in swine, although the swine don't have T162I
