H5 and N1 detected in Socorro Co ducks

Mamabird

The low pathogenic variety of H5 has apparently been detected in live ducks in Socorro County, New Mexico. Testing is underway to determine the precise nature of the virus, but this represents the first detection in the Southwest region of the country. Almost all other detections of H5N1 have been in the North and Northeast.

It is likely that these viruses have been circulting for some time, but with increased monitoring by state and federal authorities, more is being detected and reported to the public. Local poultry flock owners should keep a sharp eye out for the spread of this virus to domestic birds.
