A first-year teacher at Cedar Lane Elementary School in Olivehurst is believed to have died of H1N1 virus complications.

Gigi Cartoscelli-Purdie, 47, of Yuba City, died early Saturday at Rideout Memorial Hospital, her husband, Jeff, said today. Purdie had been sent home from school Friday morning with flu-like symptoms.

Jeff Purdie said his wife had been battling a persistent cough for a couple of weeks and suffering from walking pneumonia; she had not gotten a flu shot.

The sudden death of a Yuba County Elementary school teacher has left her family pointing the finger at the H1N1 virus.

Although the coroner's office has not released an exact cause of death, it's still put teachers and parents at Cedar Lane Elementary School in Olivehurst on alert.

The school has been very proactive about the situation.

Teachers have been offered free influenza shots, a precaution that all health departments across the north state suggest taking this year.

A Yuba City family is mourning the loss of a wife and mother, 47-year old Gigi Cartoscelli-Purdie.

The family refused to comment on camera, but believe Purdie, a healthy first grade teacher, died on Saturday due to complications of the H1N1 influenza.

Has anyone heard if this was really an H1N1 related death? very little flu here in N CA... I would think the H1N1 test results would be back by now.

The obituary, usually written by family members, states she died from complications from H1N1.

Yes, thank you - however, I was looking for a medically verified cause of death rather than the greiving family's suspicions. When the obit was written, the autopsy report was not in yet, there is very little if any H1N1 circulating, and the symptoms reported in the paper were not entirely consistent with H1N1.

We do not have the autopsy. If you see a follow-up report, can you post it?
