As of 21 February 2010, worldwide more than 213 countries and overseas territories or communities have reported laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009. More than 3200 deaths have occurred in the Asia Pacific region.
As part of international efforts to support developing countries combat the pandemic, Australia recently started delivering vaccine to the World Health Organisation (WHO) for distribution across the Asia Pacific region.
More than 1.3 million doses of Australia?s donated vaccine were delivered to Laos and PNG, for provision to health care workers and high risk groups such as pregnant women. A further 85,800 doses have been delivered to Fiji.
In addition to donating up to 2.1 million doses of vaccine, Australia has provided more thanMo $12 million through its aid program for the international response to the pandemic. This support has mostly been through the World Health Organisation (WHO) and includes $1 million to assist with distribution of vaccines.
Deliveries of vaccine across the region will continue over coming weeks.
Other nations donating vaccine directly to the WHO for use in developing countries across the world are Brazil, France, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
