H1N1 takes the life of 32 year old Griffin, Georgia man

A mother?s story becomes as warning to others. After losing her son to the H1N1, she wants to warn others about the unpredictably of this virus which seems to be no respecter of persons.
Shane?s mother, Rebecca Ragan, tells how her son, who had no other known health problems, succumbed to pneumonia following the H1N1 virus. She told of the events leading up to his death. On a Saturday, he complained of a cold; but apparently did not go to the doctor or seek help until Monday when she rushed him to the hospital. Apparently he did not realize the seriousness of his illness. She states that he was nearly unconscious by the time they reached the emergency room.
She states that he could not walk and was having trouble breathing. She said he did not fall into any of the high risk categories for increased danger from the flu. On Monday before he passed away (over two weeks later) he seemed to be better; but on Tuesday when she saw him, she knew he did not have much longer.
She describes him as very caring man who loved fishing ? who was active in his church; and was always helping others. But this time no one could help him. The flu had turned into pneumonia and it had infected his bloodstream. He was in the hospital for over two weeks. Knowing how he cared about others, she knew he would want her to warn people about the seriousness of this flu, warning them to be cautious, aware, and taking all recommended precautions against contacting this virus. While some have the H1N1 and have a mild or moderate case ? others seem to go downhill rapidly; and there is no rhyme or reason as to who will be affected either way.
It was reported this morning that 28 pregnant women have died from this virus. Pregnant women are not to receive the live nasal virus; and yet the no-preservative vaccine in individual doses can be found which is recommended for them.
The reason so many people are hesitant about receiving the shot is that they do not know who to believe or to trust. They feel that the government has not been forthcoming about the information needed to make a personal decision regarding to get the flu vaccine or not. But there are those who have come forth saying that they had suffered severe consequences from the vaccine; but the government does not validate their claims. In 1976, when there was a rush for everyone to get the shot, there were more people who died from the vaccine than from the flu itself. And it is not known if everyone receiving shot will be immune.
There is a report of those receiving the shot and then still having the flu ? hopefully not as severe. The shot does not make you immune right away and children are advised to get the second shot when the first one is hard to find. The immunity does not take place until weeks after the second shot. So there is a time element involved here as well.
The reason people are concerned about the vaccine is that it contains mercury; even as they say in trace amounts. The reason this is part of the vaccine is so that they can give multiple shots to different individuals from the same vial without it becoming contaminated. There was a deadly consequence in the 1920?s when a doctor had been giving children in Australia diphtheria shots ? the first 21 kids who got the vaccine, did fine ? some days later with no preservative in the vaccine, 11 kids died in one day. That is when they started adding the mercury as an anti-bacterial and preservative.
When one doctor was asked why they didn?t have them all in single dose form, he said it was too expensive. Too expensive for the government to save lives ? many more people would take the vaccine if it did not have the mercury in it. Our country has paid billions of dollars for vaccine made in four different countries and we were promised that the vaccine would be plentiful; and now barely into the flu season and there is a shortage ? perhaps even a false shortage to make people think they need to hurry up and get the shot before they are all gone. Americans have become so skeptical because they do not trust what they hear or much more what they do not hear.
This morning it was reported that Georgia should receive 93,000 doses here sometime next week. Most pharmacist have completely run out of the liquid form of the Tami flu for children and some are using the old pestle and mortar to grind down the pills and adding a sweet syrup to it until more shipments of this drug is available. It is reported that if you start taking this medicine within 24 hours of taking the flu ? it seems to work well; otherwise not.
If our government had been more forth coming, honest, and explained what everyone needed to know instead of them having to find out vital information about a possible life or death situation bit by bit, perhaps more would consider getting the shot. How can we trust this same government to handle all the healthcare of 300 million people?
Griffin, which is in Spalding County, Georgia, is no different from the rest of the nation who is frustrated because of the lack of availability of the H1N1 vaccine. The Spalding County Health Department started dispensing 1,000 doses of the vaccine to long lines waiting for their dose. The department expressed their frustration at the lack of the vaccine. Some have been waiting to see how it affected others before getting the shot and now some may feel it is safe and the line will grow even longer.
Rebecca Ragan saying that her son, who was always expressing concern for others, would want her to warn everyone that this virus can be deadly. She wants to tell everyone who will listen. We have a young 27 year old man in our church that has been on a ventilator for weeks now with pneumonia resulting from the H1N1 virus. We continue to pray for his recovery. It was reported today also that some high school students in our area also has this flu ? don?t take any chances if you have cold, or flu symptoms; especially with chills and fever ? be safe and check it out ? it may be a cold, allergies, seasonal flu or it could be H1N1 and untreated could be deadly. However, to repeat, many who have had this flu have had mild to moderate cases with no ill effects; but some have died.
With a delay in the vaccine how will this affect the populace? How long does it take after receiving the vaccine until it is effective against the H1N1 virus and how long does it last? What are the potential honest side effects from the vaccine; especially for people with compromised immune systems? Remember getting the H1N1 vaccine doesn't equal instant protection to the virus.
?Children under 10 need to have two vaccinations approximately one month apart to achieve the proper immune response. Within approximately two weeks of the second dose, they should be protected in the vast majority of cases that is six weeks.
Adults (who only need a single dose of the vaccine since their bodies already have a mature immune system that is practiced at protecting the body this way) should be protected in 8 to 10 days after the vaccination.
The delay time between vaccination and immunity is required for your body to analyze the vaccine and produce an immune response which includes the development of the proper pattern of antibodies that will be effective against that strain of virus. Once the pattern is "known" by the immune system, these cells can be quickly produced to attack any of that strain of virus that enters your body after the immunity has been developed. The antibodies will prevent the virus from being able to make you sick.? Source: Wiki Answers

Perhaps if people trusted our government more and they were more open about the side effects, the production, ingredients; and explained more who should not get the shot (as well as those who should), more people could make a good decision regarding the health of their families.
Rebecca, for the loss of your son, we sincerely give you our sympathy and prayers. As it has often been said by other parents, that is not the usual nature of things that a parent should outlive their child ? and we know you are profoundly grieving; and for your courage to speak on behalf of your son to warn others ? we are truly thankful.
