Urgent steps urged to check swine flu

KARACHI (PPI): Healthcare experts have shown concern about the growing number of Swine flu cases in Karachi and asked the government to take urgent steps for fighting this viral disease. Former general secretary of Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) and noted ENT surgeon Dr Qaiser Sajjad said that the swine flu cases are reported from various countries including Pakistan every year. He said this year also many flu cases have been reported in the country, but the government had not taken proper measure steps for treatment of swine flu patients in the government hospitals, or raising awareness about the disease amongst public. Dr Sajjad said due to lack of proper facilities in the government hospitals, swine flu patients have not choice but to visit very expensive private hospitals. He said that the symptoms of swine flu are like ordinary flu but it is in fact a complicated viral disease. He regretted the government had yet to set up a virology laboratory for testing this virus in any government-run facility of Karachi. He said samples of swine flu and other viral diseases are still sent to National Institute of Health Islamabad for testing which is a time consuming process. He said such a laboratory must be set up in Karachi on war footing.
