H1N1 numbers to rise

Monday, July 06, 2009

Update: 1:14PM Fiji's health ministry is expecting to announce more cases of infection involving Pandemic H1N1 2009.

Fiji's infection level was 19 last week, but health ministry spokesman Iliesa Tora had said "there was no denying the fact that the number of confirmed cases would increase here in Fiji".

Fiji's first two cases were announced on June 20.

Among measures the health ministry was exploring towards preventing further outbreaks was possible cancellation of big public events, especially in areas that were recording high numbers.

"That is a step we are looking at and our public health people are monitoring the situation. If the Task Force gets evidence that there might be a risk in holding public gatherings in some of the centres then we will of course advise for the event to be cancelled or postponed to another date," Mr Tora said earlier.

Mr Tora is expected to provide an update this afternoon.
