H1N1 influenza epidemic alert in Ibarra

Health authorities in the province of Imbabura, in the mountains of Ecuador, two hours from Quito, announced today that the epidemiological alert was activated by the presence of a dozen cases of H1N1 flu.

As a precaution to a possible self-medication, was prohibited the open sale of influenza medicines and recommended to the population in case of symptoms associated with this disease go to a doctor to avoid complications.

As seen so far, the outbreak of the disease, declared as the first pandemic of the century, was the prison of the city of Ibarra.

Concern over suspected outbreak of swine flu in prison Ibarra

Ibarra (CRE) .-
The authorities of the Provisional Detention Centre (PDC) of Ibarra are concerned that three inmates were hospitalized with symptoms of H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu.

The detainees were taken to hospital San Vicente de Paul, one of them is in intensive care.

The commissioner of police of Imbabura, Danilo Espinosa, said that dialogue with members of the Provincial Health Department to coordinate actions.

Meanwhile, other inmates demanded from the prison authorities for the immediate relocation because they will not get it.

"There are people who have the swine, are already in the hospital and we're going to keep holding this disease," said one of the inmates.

Relatives of suspected infected went to the nursing home for information and to request guarantees.

So far, a brigade of the Provincial Health Department is overseeing the inmates, while doctors appealed for calm.

37 suspicious cases of influenza in Imbabura

The minister of Health, David Chiriboga, called to the citizenship to take precautions before the increase of cases of respiratory illnesses type influenza, in some cities of the saw. This increase stems from the cold temperatures and to the moisture that is demonstrated during the last weeks. The virus of influenza A (H1N1), that appeared in 2009, has already turned into a seasonal virus, that is to say that appears at the cold stations, together with other similar viruses as A (H3N2).

Between 2 and on December 18, 2010 type has presented to themselves 37 suspicious cases of illness influenza in Imbabura.

The sprout of last week happened in the Center of Provisional Detention of Ibarra. There there appeared a whole of 32 cases, of which 11 needed hospitalization and 5 of these persons had to enter to the intensive care unit. To the moment they all are evolving favorably. All these cases received treatment with oseltamivir.
