14 H1N1 cases confirmed

After outbreaks of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and dengue fever, the district is now facing another threat. Fourteen cases of H1N1 were confirmed on Tuesday alone, taking the total to 25 cases since the start of the monsoon.

According to officials, the 14 cases that were confirmed on Tuesday included four children aged below two years, two children aged between two and four years and one pregnant woman.

The cases were reported from Alappuzha, Haripad, Purakkad, Pulinkunnu and Ramankary. Blood samples of several others who were suspected to have contracted the disease have also been collected for verification.

District Medical Officer K.M. Sirabuddin said that precautionary activities were strengthened and that the health wing was maintaining a tight vigil.

H1N1 cases on the rise in Alappuzha

ALAPPUZHA: As many as 14 persons including six children and a pregnant lady were confirmed with H1N1 in Alappuzha district yesterday within a week.

The new figures put the H1N1 influenza cases at 25 since its outbreak this year, district medical officer said. This has been confirmed by the tests carried out by National Virology Institute.

According to district health department, the fever cases were reported at the Kuttanad, Ambalapuzha, Haripad, Pulinkunnu and Purakkad areas.

Four people tested positive for the dreaded H1N1 in Kerala today.

Three cases were reported from Alappuzha and another from Pathanamthitta, official sources said here.

However, about 61 patients were put under Home Quarantine and 12 under Hospital Quarantine in various places in the State for the last two days. Throat swab of about 34 patients were sent for lab test.

July 6: In the wake of a reported H1N1 outbreak in Alappuzha, the Ernakulam district administration has directed the health department to open isolation wards in all hospitals immediately.

?Isolation wards will be opened in all taluk and general hospitals in the district for swine flu-affected patients,? said district collector P.I. Sheik Pareeth. The authorities are also planning to convene a meeting to discuss the gravity of the situation. ?A meeting will be held within two days with all medical officers concerned. Further steps will be taken after the meeting,? Pareeth said.

Experts said isolating swine flu patients was the only way to prevent the spread of the disease. ?We initiated [monsoon outbreak] preventive measures over a month ago,? Pareeth said, adding that nine squads had been formed to deal with pandemics. ?The squads are equipped with vehicles and medicines. Each squad has been allotted Rs5,000 from National Rural Health Mission,? the Collector said. The authorities are planning to set up swine flu screening centres at all government hospitals in the district, but airport has not been included.

?The health department is the implementing agency. They should alert us and depute a team of doctors for the purpose of quarantining patients. So far, we have not received any intimation from the department or the district administration,? said airport director A.C. K. Nair. When this was brought to Pareeth?s notice, he said steps would be taken to set up a screening centre at the airport soon. ?No case of swine flu has been reported in the district so far,? he said.

Be cautious against H1N1: People urged

KOCHI: With as many as 14 people, including six children and a pregnant woman, suffering from H1N1 in Alappuzha district, the fear is slowly gripping the neighbouring districts. As a considerable number of people from Alappuzha district visit the city everyday, the Kochi Corporation authorities are planning to implement some urgent precautionary measures.

?The Corporation will coordinate with the district administration authorities to make sure that the hospitals are equipped with necessary medicines to contain the outbreak. The medical officers informed us that no H1N1 cases have been reported in the city so far. However, we are planning to take some urgent precautionary measures in this regard,? said Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf. With heavy rain forecast for the next few days, the health officials have advised people to exercise caution to prevent the spread of H1N1 virus. The civic body will organise awareness campaigns through schools, colleges and voluntary organisations to impart information about the swine flu and the preventive steps that need to be taken.

State registers rise in H1N1, rat fever cases

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The number of patients with H1N1 and rat fever in the state is on the rise. As many as 15 people have been afflicted with H1N1 and 11 with rat fever according to the update on July 5.

Two persons have been affected with dengue fever while three have been found to be afflicted with Malaria. Fever with shivering, headache, vomiting and sweating are the symptoms of malaria. Dengue has the symptoms of sudden high fever and severe headache, pain behind the eyes and nausea.

The Health Services director has warned against washing and bathing in murky waters and has instructed the use of gloves and socks for animal caretakers and agricultural workers to prevent the spread of rat fever. They have also been directed to take a weekly preventive medicine, which is available at the primary health centres, free of cost. The symptoms of rat fever are high fever, headache, body ache, red eyes and muscle cramps.

The preventive measures aimed at mosquito control include destruction of mosquito breeding spots such as broken vessels, bottles, coconut shells, tyre, garden pots, sheaths of plants, hollows of trees and even the coconut shells used for collecting rubber latex, which will collect water in them. To prevent the spread of epidemics, patients are advised to use handkerchiefs while coughing and sneezing.

Those who have cold and cough are also advised complete rest at home.

Pregnant women, affected with fever, should consult a doctor at the earliest and get the appropriate treatment. Those persons with kidney trouble, liver functioning problems and diabetes have also been advised utmost caution.

Doctors strike could worsen health concerns

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state, already ravaged by dengue, H1N1 and rat fever, will now see tougher times with the government doctors going on strike from July 19.

As it is, there is a severe shortage of doctors in the government sector and almost half of the posts of specialist doctors are lying vacant in spite of the walkin interviews.

A strike would almost paralyse patient care in the government sector.

The strike is in protest against the government's indifference in addressing issues like disparities in pay revision and pathetic service conditions.

The indefinite strike, which was originally proposed from June 10, was postponed by a month on the request from Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for more time to study the anomalies in pay revision. "We were promised that the disparities will be solved when the Pay Commissions recommendations are implemented.

A government order was also issued to this effect. But we have been totally sidelined.

As per the current situation, a specialist doctor at a taluk or general hospital earns much less than a MBBS doctor at the primary health centres,'' said KGMOA state president S Prameela Devi.

There is also a huge shortage of doctors in the health services, with no replacements even for those who retire. Even those who joined after attending walkin interview had left soon after joining service.

"This adds to the workload of the doctors, who are even denied leave, off day and even eligible leave," said Prameela Devi.

6 doctors contract H1N1

ALAPPUZHA, July 7, 2011

The number of fever-hit in the district continued to rise with six doctors at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital too reportedly contracting H1N1 fever, taking the total to 32 H1N1 cases on Thursday.

However, the district medical authorities refused to confirm the latest figures, maintaining that the official figure would be 25 till the latest lab test reports came. However, the authorities admitted at a review meeting called by Union Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal here on Thursday that the number of H1N1 cases was on the rise.

Precautionary measures were being put in place, District Medical Officer K.M. Sirabuddin said.

The number of rat fever cases in the district as on Thursday was 40, while there were 32 confirmed Japanese Encephalitis cases. Also, 28 malaria cases and 16 chikungunya cases that were recorded by the district medical authorities.

Kerala Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, was admitted to the Medical College Hospital on Friday morning with chest infection and fever.

Mr. Chandy, who had been unwell, was brought to the MCH at around 11 p.m. on Thursday and kept under observation. However, he was allowed to leave at 8 a.m. on Friday. as he insisted on attending the Assembly proceedings, hospital sources said.

He was admitted at 10 a.m. again in the VIP room in the medical pay wards at MCH. He has been advised complete rest for the next three to four days, doctors said. Visitors are not being allowed access to him.

An official release here said that the Chief Minister’s official programmes till Sunday stood cancelled.

Swine Flu spreads in Kerala, 11 more cases reported

Ten more cases of H1N1 were reported in Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha districts on Friday.

Six confirmed cases were reported in Thiruvananthapuram and four in Alappuzha. Staff in hospitals across Alappuzha district reported symptoms of H1N1, even though health authorities said the infection was mild and there was no need to panic.

Meanwhile, the H1N1 nodal agency has decided to conduct an orientation programme for hospital staff, including doctors, nurses and public health activists, in Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts on Saturday.

The staff would be given training in dealing with H1N1 cases and disease prevention and control activities.

Similar training programmes would be held in other districts as well. As per the request of the state health authorities, a fresh consignment of anti-H1N1 drugs was expected to reach Thiruvananthapuram from Chennai on Saturday.

H1N1 infects four cops at Palakkad police camp

PALAKKAD: Four trainee police officers of the Kerala Armed Police (Two Batallion) camp in Muttikulangara have tested positive to the H1N1 virus.

The samples of six police trainees at the KAP battalion, who were suffering from fever, were sent to the virology institute in Manipal.

The results arrived on Saturday showed that four of them had tested positive to the H1N1 virus.

District Medical Officer Venugopal told ?Express? that of the 200 trainees at the KAP camp in Muttikulangara, 160 of them had developed fever during last week.

Since there is only one doctor at the camp, additional doctors and staff from the district hospital have been posted there.

The trainees were lodged at the KAP second battalion camp and were treated.

The samples were collected and taken to the Thrissur Medical College from where it was taken in a virus transport medium to Manipal and tested.

He said that there were vehicles and ambulances which, if need be, would be utilised to take the patients from the camp to the hospital.

The DMO said that altogether 20 samples were collected from the sick trainees of which only six were sent for the H1N1 test.

Two more cases of H1N1 reported in Alappuzha



ALAPPUZHA: With the reports of two more H1N1 cases on Saturday, the total number of people who have been affected by H1N1 has risen to 28 in the district.

District Medical Officer K M Sirabuddin told ‘Express’ that a 4-year-old boy and an 18-year old girl, both from Karthikapally taluk, were tested positive on Tuesday.

A 45-year-old man, hailing from Haripad, was also tested positive on Friday and his condition is said to be critical.

He was admitted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

According to District Medical Officer (DMO) K M Sirabuddin , of the 14 cases, four are children below the age of two and one is a pregnant woman.

No fewer than five doctors were also affected by the disease.

On Tuesday alone, 14 H1N1 cases have been reported in the district.

The cases were reported from Haripad, Karthikapally, Kuttanadu, Purackadu, Kainakary, Vandanam, Thakazhi, Kalarcode, Karuvatta and Pulinkunnu areas on Tuesday.

On July 7, Union Minister K C Venugopal directed to take immediate steps for filling vacancies of doctors and nursing assistants and ensuring the availability of sufficient medicine in all the hospitals.

Last year, 34 cases of H1N1 had been reported and the the number of deaths due to the fever was two.

State H1N1 nodal officer Amar Fettle on Saturday conducted a special training programme on H1N1 at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital for the doctors of Alappuzha, Kollam and Pathanamthitta district.

One H1N1 Patient Dies, 4 Positive Cases Reported

One person, who was confirmed to have H1N1 infection, died in this district last night while four positive cases were reported in Palakkad, according to Health Department sources here today.

A total of 34 patients had been quarantined in hospitals while 174 patients were under home quarantine, the Department said in a release.

One of the patients was undergoing treatment in ICU while the throat swab of 27 suspected cases had been sent for examination to competent laboratories.

A 35-yer-old man from Ponmudi area, who was admitted with respiratory problems, was confirmed to be an H1N1 case and died in the hospital yesterday.

Meanwhile, senior Health Department officials said necessary measures had been taken for early detection of suspected cases and their throat swabs would be send for tests.

LDF stages walkout over H1N1 fever issue

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 11 (PTI) CPI(M)-led LDF Opposition in Kerala today staged a walkout from the Assembly in protest against Speaker G Karthikeyan''s refusal to entertain their adjournment motion on the spread of various types of fever, including H1N1, in the state.
Replying to the notice for the motion, Health Minister Adoor Prakash said one person had died of H1N1 out of 78 cases reported so far this year.
Claiming that the UDF government had checked the spread of the fever, Prakash said 85 out of 1408 H1N1 affected persons had died last year during this period when LDF was in power.

Five more H1N1 cases in district

Five new cases of Influenza A (H1N1) were confirmed in the district on Tuesday, taking the total case load this year in Thiruvananthapuram to 17.

The first H1N1 death in the State this season was reported from the district on Saturday, when a 35-year-old man from Ponmudi died at the Medical College hospital following acute respiratory distress syndrome and hepato-renal failure.

H1N1 surveillance had slackened during the initial part of the year despite warnings from public health experts about the H1N1 virus still circulating in the community.

This year, till date, 87 cases of H1N1 have been reported, a chunk of them, soon after the rains.

?The infection is following the expected course and can spike again if rains intensify. H1N1 is an air-borne infection and it is human behaviour which spreads the infection. Doctors and the public need to realise that all precautions and guidelines have to be followed strictly. Early treatment must be sought for all flu-like illnesses,? a public health expert said.

H1N1 claims one life

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 15-year-old girl hailing from Kollam died at the Medical College Hospital here on Wednesday.

The cause of death was later confirmed to be H1N1. The girl was identified as Milka S Thampi, daughter of Thampi, Chithrapuri Puthenveedu, Punaloor in Kollam. Milka was admitted to the hospital after she showed symptoms such as septic shock, aspiration pneumonia, down?s syndrome, hypothyroidism and seizure disorder.

As many as six more cases of H1N1 was reported in the state on Thursday with three each from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. There are already 25 patients under hospital quarantine and 430 under home quarantine following the outbreak of fever again in the state during the past few days.

Thiruvananthapuram, Saturday, July 16, 2011: As many as 26 patients have been tested positive due to dreaded H1N1 fever in the past four days in Kerala. About 1576 patients were put under home quarantine, 116 under treatment in hospital and 15 patients in ICU.
Throat swabs of 179 patients were sent for lab test, official sources said. Fourteen positive cases were reported from Thiruvananthapuram, four from Kollam, two each from Kottayam and Tiruchur, one each from Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Pathanamthitta.

Two die of H1N1 in Kerala


H1N1 disease in Kerala in the past three days, taking the number of deaths due to the infection to four since the outbreak of monsoon.

According to a Health Department release, a 57-year-old woman, who had been confirmed as a H1N1 positive, died yesterday at Kuttikkad in Thrissur district. She had been admitted to a hospital in the district with fever and vomitting.

A 56-year-old man of Idakkulangara in Karunagapally in Kollam, who was also confirmed as H1N1 positive, died on July 16. He was admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Kottayam with fever and breathlessness, the release said.

Two H1N1 patients are undergoing treatment in Thiruvananthapuram district and one in Idukki district, it said. A total of 12 suspected cases are under hospital quarantine and 481 patients under home quarantine.

Throat swab samples of 29 patients had been sent for tests, the release said.

H1N1 influenza: One more dies in Kerala; 16 test positive


One more person has succumbed to H1N1 influenza in Kerala taking the number of deaths due to the infection to five since the outbreak of the monsoon on May 27 while 16 persons have tested positive in the last four days.

Subisha (36) died in the Medical college hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on July 20. She was admitted with acute respiratory distress syndrome and was tested H1N1 positive, a health department release said.

Five positive cases were reported from Thiruvananthapuram, three each from Kannur and Kottayam, two from Kozhikode and one each from Kollam, Alappuzha and Wayanad district.

Twenty four persons are under hospital quarantine with suspected H1N1 symptoms and 410 are under home quarantine. Throat swabs of 54 persons was sent for lab tests.

Meanwhile, a Central team of experts and officials visited parts of Alappuzha district from where various types of viral fever have been reported.

The team head Dr VK Raina said the situation was under control. They would visit other districts like Kollam, where many cases of viral fever have been reported and submit a report to the Centre about the situation, he said.
