Winston-Salem, NC --

The H1N1 virus is starting to work its way through our schools. Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools says more than 20% of the students at Whitaker Elementary were out sick.

At any given time, the school system usually see about 5% of the kids out, but many have reached 10%

We also checked with Guilford County Schools, so far they haven't seen quite the sick list. On average, the absentee rate is about 3%. Right now, they are at 4% overall.

Local health departments in the state have started to get their first shipments of the H1N1 vaccine.

Alamance County says it got 200 doses and will administer them to front line health care workers such as EMS.

Guilford County says it got 2,100 doses of the vaccine. The vaccine will be distributed to private medical providers whos practices serve children and young adults.

Forsyth County has not received its supply yet.

The Centers for the Disease Control recommends everyone from 6 months to 24-years-old get vaccinated. Also, the FluMist vaccine is safe for children 2 to 18 years of age.

Health officials say the H1N1 flu has caused 60 pediatric deaths.

A recent poll shows about half of the parents have safety concerns and do not want to vaccinate their kids. The CDC says those fears are misplaced and the vaccine is safe for kids.
