H1N1 flu death confirmed in Warren County
GLENS FALLS -- Warren County Health Services officials on Monday confirmed that the death of a Warren County resident at Glens Falls Hospital on Saturday was the result of the 2009 H1N1 influenza.
The fatality is the first linked to the H1N1 flu in Warren County, said Patricia Auer, the county's Health Services director.
In a press release issued midday Monday, Auer said the death of "an adult resident of the county" had been confirmed as being caused by H1N1, also known as swine flu, following lab testing over the weekend.
"To protect the privacy of the family, Warren County Health Services is not releasing any additional information about the deceased," Auer said in the release.
On Saturday night, a Glens Falls Hospital spokesman identified the deceased resident as a 40-year-old woman from the Glens Falls area who had died Saturday morning at the hospital following complaints of flu-like symptoms. The woman was diagnosed with pneumonia while in the hospital.
"To date, the majority of 2009 H1N1 influenza illness continues to be mild and similar to seasonal flu symptoms," Auer said. "Most people have recovered at home without serious complications."
Auer said Warren County expects to receive a shipment of additional doses of H1N1 vaccine within the "next several weeks" and plans to schedule clinics for priority groups as vaccine supplies allow.
In October, Warren County distributed 200 doses of H1N1 injectable vaccine to pregnant women and first responders. The county has also offered nasal mist H1N1 vaccine to children during the last two weeks, with another clinic for about 100 children scheduled for today.
Auer suggested that people concerned about getting the vaccine should check with their own health care providers to see if a supply is on hand.
