Louisiana health officials say an east Texas child has died at a Shreveport hospital of H1N1 flu complications within the last day.

H1N1 appeared in the spring of 2009 and spread rapidly around the United States and world.

The new strain of flu caused more deaths among children than previous strains of flu, which typically are harder on the elderly.

Flu continues to be widespread in Louisiana and Texas, but the H1N1 strain accounted for 10 percent or less of cases reported between Feb. 6 and 12.

This year's seasonal flu vaccine includes the H1N1 strain as well as two other strains of flu.

H1N1 kills Harrison County 13-year-old

Elysian Fields - Harrison County (KYTX) - A family and community are in mourning, after 13-year-old Trenton Lindsey dies in a Shreveport hospital from the H1N1 virus.

It began as a fever and the flu, and then progressed to hospitalization and death.

Teens from youth ministries across Harrison County came to pray for 13-year-old Trenton Lindsey.

"He treated everybody like family and let everyone treat him like a brother. And through hard times, he'd come help you," says classmate Courtney Anderson.

Anderson learned about Lindsey's death when she made it to Elysian Fields Middle School Wednesday morning.

Many others found out on Facebook.

"It was totally emotional, everyone was crying," says Anderson.

Lindsey died at LSU Health Sciences Center Tuesday night from pneumonia, a complication of the H1N1 virus.

"Everybody was giving everybody hugs and most of the kids in the office too. Of course I went to the office with my friends," says Anderson.

ELYSIAN FIELDS, TX (KSLA) ? The small community of Elysian Fields is still trying to cope with the loss of a middle school student who passed away this week from the H1N1 flu virus. Classmates learned of 13-year-old Trenton Lindsey's death at school on Wednesday. The district says local pastors and school counselors helped them cope with the news.

Parents we talked to said their 1st concern was the boy's family. Their 2nd concern was their childrens' health...
