H1N1 Claims Life in Saskatchewan

It's the first H1-N1 flu death in our province since July 16th, and brings the total to 5 so far.

Health officials will confirm the case at a news conference this afternoon.

The other 4 victims..a woman in her 40's, a man in his 70's, a boy under 10 and a woman in her 50's..all had underlying health problems. (ckrm Oct 14/09)

H1N1 not yet ruled out in death of Wynyard teen

REGINA ? A death in the province earlier this month has health officials back on heightened alert that a second wave of the deadly H1N1 virus is imminent.

Earlier this summer, the deaths of four people were attributed to the virus. Another death occurred recently, but Dr. Saqib Shahab, Saskatchewan?s deputy chief medical health officer, stopped short of linking it to flu.

Asked by a radio reporter about rumours that a teenage boy in the Wynyard area succumbed to the illness, Shahab couldn?t confirm the death was H1N1 related.

?At the moment, deaths that are confirmed by the pandemic remains at four,? he told a news conference Wednesday afternoon, addling, ?We are investigating an additional death at the moment. That investigation is not complete.?

The Horizon School Division confirms that a boy who went to Wynyard Composite High School, and who had contracted the H1N1 flu virus, has died.

Director of Education Marc Danylchuk says this is not the same student that prompted the division's flu pandemic plan to be launched last week, "We only became aware of this situation late Monday."

The school division also says health officials aren't yet sure if it was the virus that caused the death. If confirmed, it would be Saskatchewan's 5th H1 N1 death.

A facebook group has been set up as family and friends mourn the Wynyard teen.

The division has cancelled a number of events in Wynyard as a result of the death. A weekend Cross Country track meet has been moved to Regina.
