Guyana has first cases of virus new to region

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — At least two people have been sickened by the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus in Guyana in the first locally transmitted cases in the South American country, the health minister said Wednesday.

A regional lab confirmed the virus in a 4-year-old child and a 40-year-old man in the eastern part of the country near its border with Suriname, Health Minister Bheri Ramsarran said.

Two cases of Chikungunya identified in Berbice

Health Minister, Dr Bheri Ramsaran on Tuesday revealed that two cases of Chikungunya have been identified in Guyana.

He made this disclosure at a media briefing during which he said that the cases were from Canje, Berbice, and authorities have since dispatched a five-member medical team to the area.

The Minister said after there was an outbreak of the disease in the Caribbean, steps were taken by the Health Ministry to monitor the situation in Guyana.
Dr Ramsaran disclosed that they had quietly engaged in a countrywide campaign, which saw medical staff at the various health centres and hospitals being informed to look out for Chikungunya symptoms in patients. The ports of entry were also warned to look out for the disease. ?We have been very vigilant,? the Minister said.

He noted that a report was made that there was an increase of cases with the same symptoms as Chikungunya in New Amsterdam; as such, samples were taken from those cases and sent to a lab in Trinidad for testing. The Minister disclosed that a total of 84 suspected cases were identified; however, only 30 samples were sent to Trinidad. He added that on Saturday, eight case reports were returned, and two samples were positive for Chikungunya.

One of the cases is from Cumberland and the other from Canefield, both in Canje. These cases involve a four-year-old child and a 40-year-old woman. The Health Minister said the team sent to Berbice would be stationed there until the campaign is over.

He added that now that the infected area has been identified, his Ministry is working along with the Region Six officials to provide more protection to residents.

Dr Ramsaran pointed out that with this disclosure, they have heightened fogging and vector control exercises not only in Berbice but will continue the campaign in Georgetown as well.

Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer Dr Shamdeo Persaud is advising citizens to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from the disease.
He urged residents to make use of nets and get rid of any water-filled containers or pot-holes in yards since they are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Dr Persaud is encouraging persons who have dengue-fever symptoms to seek immediate medical attention since it might be Chikungunya as the symptoms are similar.

More Chikungunya cases confirmed in Berbice

At least a dozen more cases of the Chikungunya virus have been confirmed even as the Ministry of Health continues fervent efforts to control its impact.

Last week Guyana recorded its first two cases of the disease ? a four-year-old girl and a 50-year-old woman. The two cases were among 30 blood samples from patients with symptoms including fever, that were sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) laboratory in Trinidad for testing.

The latest cases were among a batch of 130 samples that were taken in recent days. All of the cases thus far were found in the Berbice area, with the first two coming from Canje and some of the recent cases also coming from sections of Canje and Corentyne.

This development has been confirmed by Chief Medical Officer, Dr Shamdeo Persaud, who told Kaieteur News that the total number of confirmed cases currently stands at 14.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (GINA) ? Since the alert for the chikungunya disease began some weeks ago, the ministry of health in Guyana has sent over 1,000 samples to be tested at the regional laboratory run by Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad and Tobago.

Thus far, only 15 cases have been confirmed after being tested.

The ministry is awaiting the arrival of additional results, which will inform further evaluations and measures to be taken...

After weeks of battling to contain it to sections of Berbice, Guyana has recorded its first case of the Chikungunya virus in the capital city. This publication has been reliably informed that the mosquito-borne virus, which was first detected in Canje, Berbice, has made its way to West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

The infected victim, this publication understands is a 28-year-old male who was found to be exhibiting symptoms of the virus. Suspecting that the young man had contracted the virus, local health officials made the informed decision of sending a sample of his blood to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) Laboratory in Trinidad for testing. CARPHA, this publication understands, was able to confirm that the virus had infiltrated the young man?s system.

The young man is at home battling his symptoms with keen attention and support from health officials.

This publication however understands that the Health Ministry is not yet in receipt of the confirmatory results from the Trinidad based laboratory.

The first two cases of the virus were confirmed a few weeks ago, and soon after 12 more suspected cases were validated by CARPHA. All of the cases were found in sections of Berbice, Region Six.

The Health Ministry had commenced intense vector control activities, particularly in the city, even before the discovery of the virus here. Moves were also initiated, through awareness campaigns, to encourage residents to embrace good environmental practices with a view of reducing potential breeding grounds for the mosquito vector.

GEORGETOWN (GINA) -- Health Minister Dr Bheri Ramsaran today disclosed that there are 12 more confirmed cases of the mosquito- borne disease, chikungunya.

Dr. Ramsaran told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that some results from samples sent recently for testing at the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad and Tobago were received today, and that Dr. Morris Edwards, epidemiologist is analysing the data.

Prior to the new cases, there were 19 confirmed cases, all from the Canje, Berbice area, Region Six..

GEORGETOWN (GINA) -- The chikungunya virus has made its way to other parts of the country with seven of the 12 newly confirmed cases emanating from Regions 3, 4, 5 and the City.

Minister of Health Dr. Bheri Ramsaran during an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA) today, said there were three cases from West Berbice, namely Bath Settlement, Bush Lot, and Number 9 Village, one each from Mahaicony and Ithaca, one from North Ruimveldt and one from Crane, West Coast Demerara, Region Three.

According to the Minister, on July 1 upon receiving the results of samples that were sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad and Tobago, it was confirmed that the disease has spread.

The 12 more cases of the mosquito- borne disease have brought the total number of cases to 31 thus far.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) Officials in the South American country of Guyana say they are stepping up efforts to fight the spread of the chikungunya virus amid an increase in cases.

Chief Medical Officer Shamdeo Persaud said Saturday that the health ministry is spraying the capital of Georgetown and other populated areas as he urged people to destroy mosquito-breeding grounds.

Guyana has registered more than 1,000 cases, with several clinics reporting about 60 new cases a day.
