both sexes were affected. 6 cases were confirmed (2 deaths + 4
surviving) as CCHF by RT-PCR test at NIV, Pune. Several cattle,
goats, sheeps were found positive for CCHF. Out of 8 pools of ticks, 2
pools (residence of index case) were found positive for CCHF. First
reported case (90 years, male) occurred on 23/6/13 with fever,
diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding Disorder. Last case reported on
10/07/13. Cases were treated at CHC Babra and referred to PDU
Rajkot. Patients treated with Ribavirin in the hospital. All cases
occurred among cattle grazing community living in houses with heaps
of cow dung and other garbage nearby. Cattles were living along with
human beings. The veterinary department has undertaken the
Acaricidal treatment on 1668 cattle with Deltamethrine. IRS in
affected locality in human dwellings and cattle dwellings. Day to day
monitoring of anti-larval and anti Tick measures done. Active

AHMEDABAD: The dreaded Congo fever is suspected to have claimed lives of three men in Barvalataluka in Ahmedabad district. Following this, the health department has asked medical and veterinary teams to undertake fogging operations to contain the virus which spreads through ticks found on the cattle.

Regional deputy director of health at Civil Hospital Dr Neelam Patel said that three men were reported dead in Kundal village in Barwala due to haemorrhagic fever suspected to be the Congo fever. Moreover, two relatives of the victims, including a woman, too have been admitted in the Bhavnagar Government Hospital. The victims belong to Bharwad families staying in the same locality.

positive for CCHF by Real Time RT-PCR in NIV, Pune. 8 more serum
samples were collected and sent to NIV, Pune, which tested negative for
CCHF by Real Time RT-PCR. Entomological survey done. 14 cattle

A 68 year female admitted in a private hospital in Patan on 11/07/13 with
complaints of fever, headache and abdominal pain. Patient was referred to
BJMC, Ahmedabad on 18/07/13 for further treatment. She died on
20/07/13. Another patient (7 year male) developed fever, nausea, vomiting
and headache on 16/07/13 and admitted in Dharpur Medical College,
Patan. Patient recovered. Both cases tested positive for CCHF in NIV,
Pune by Real Time RT-PCR. 8 more serum samples were collected and
sent to NIV, Pune, which tested negative for CCHF by Real Time RTPCR.
Entomological survey done. 35 cattle serum samples and 67 pools of
ticks sent to NIV, Pune which tested negative for CCHFV. Control
measures undertaken. Contacts under surveillance. Garbage removal and
cleanliness drive undertaken in the village by Gram Panchayat. Anti-larval

serum samples and 40 pool of hard ticks sample have been collected and sent
to NIV, Pune; result awaited. Garbage removal and cleanliness drive
undertaken in the village by Gram Panchayat. Antilarval activity, fogging
and insecticide spray. Veterinary Dept has undertaken Acarecidal treatment
on cattle with Deltametrhrin. Search for cases is being done.

13 suspected cases and 5 deaths due to CCHF were reported from Village
Kariyana, Taluka Babra, District Amreli in 28th week (ending on 14th July 2013).
Now the State has revised the case definition and lab confirmed case had been
considered as case of CCHF. Henceforth, the State has reduced CCHF cases to
10 cases and 2 deaths.

Case reported from Shanti Nagar, Sarpat Gate, Bhuj (urban) in
District Kutch. A 48 year old female patient complained of high
grade fever with vomiting and chest pain visited GK General
Hospital on 08-09-2013. She was admitted first to a private
hospital (Yash Hospital) in Bhuj on 08-09-2013 and later referred
to GK General Hospital, Bhuj on 10-09-2013 after her condition
deteriorated and she became unconscious. Her condition
worsened further and she developed cough, runny nose, diarrhea,
haemoptysis and haematuria. The patient died on 13-09-2013
because of cardio respiratory failure due to Viral Haemorrhagic
Fever. The serum sample of patient sent to NIV Pune tested
positive for Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF). House
to house survey has been done by District RRT in the affected
areas. All contacts of the case are kept under surveillance. One
person, who came in close contact with the CCHF patient, was
admitted in GK General Hospital with mild fever and his serum
sample has been sent to PDMU Rajkot and NIV Pune; result
awaited. No new case has been reported in the area. Animal
husbandry department has been informed regarding preventive
measures.
