Health authorities on their toes as leptospirosis case get confirmed

SURAT: The suspected leptospirosis case reported on Tuesday got confirmed in the tests carried out on Wednesday. It is the first case of this monsoon. Following the confirmation the health authorities are on their toes to deal with the situation.

The disease has created panic in south Gujarat in 2011 as just within four months it claimed 187 lives in and around south Gujarat. Total 928 people got infected with leptospira bacteria in 2011. The disease is considered one of the most deadly disease in the region as it gives limited time for cure and results in death in majority of the cases.

After persistent fever for more than 10 days a 37 year old Hitesh Patel from Vaniya Sheri of Mahidharpura area of the city was shifted to Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) run SMIMER hospital with suspected Leptospirosis .

Dr KI Khatri, Deputy Health officer of the civic body said, "We have conducted the tests and have sent for examinations. The patient was reported with Jaundice like fever." He also added, " We have checked his history and he has no connection with the visits to rural areas especially in Cane sugar fields or is no way related to animal husbandry ." " This is an odd occurrence and we will wait till for the results of the tests before arriving at any conclusions ." said Dr Hemant Desai , Deputy Commissioner Health of SMC.

Leptospirosis claims one more, 20 affected

SURAT: One person died of leptospirosis in New Civil Hospital on Friday while two more patients with symptoms of the deadly diseases were hospitalized in Vyara and Gandevi talukas.

Mohan Halpati, 51, a native of Amadhara village in Chikhli taluka died after battling the illness for a week. With Halpati's death, the death toll due to leptospirosis in the region has gone up to three.

In all, 20 persons have been affected by the monsoon-related illnesses.

Ahmedabad Three people from south Gujarat have died of leptospirosis since mid-June, considered the worst start to a leptospirosis outbreak since 2010. At least 24 people have been infected in the same period, one being in Ahmedabad.

Considered ?top priority? in this season, Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas recently chaired an inter-departmental meeting to firm up prevention measures against the bacterial infection.

Health authorities are especially concerned because the sub-type that surfaced in Gujarat two years ago directly attacks the lungs and is, therefore, deadlier than more common sub-types that attack the liver and kidneys...

3 more suspected leptospirosis cases detected

Three fresh suspected cases of leptospirosis have been detected in south Gujarat since Sunday, even as while 14 others are under treatment for symptoms of or similar to the infection.

Health authorities said government micro-biology laboratories have confirmed seven suspected cases while samples of 20 others are under investigation. Ten suspected cases recovered and were discharged from hospitals, they added.

Three more people have died from suspected leptospirosis while four more cases have been detected since Tuesday, health authorities said on Thursday.

The latest figures have brought the death toll from the bacterial infection this season to six, and the number of infections to 31.

All the cases have been reported from the southern parts of the state, which has witnessed more rain than most other regions.

Three die of lepto in Surat, toll reaches 10

Three farm labourers from Surat district have died of leptospirosis while three others have tested positive for the disease that has claimed 10 lives in the district so far this year.

The deceased have been identified as Yogesh Rathod (35), Shanta Gamit (55) and Govind Patel (40). All three were brought to New Civil Hospital where they died Friday evening.
