Swine flu patient delivers baby

VADODARA: A 24-year-old pregnant woman admitted to the isolation ward of SSG Hospital as swine flu patient delivered a baby girl on Tuesday. As per hospital authorities, both the baby and mother are doing well. Samples of the newborn have been sent for test to know if she has the virus.

The woman was admitted to Bhailal Amin Hospital and was referred to SSG as suspected swine flu patient on August 17. Her sample report confirmed her as H1N1 positive on August 18. She was admitted in the isolation ward where she delivered a baby girl by normal procedure at 9.30 am on Tuesday. The baby has been isolated from the mother.

Woman dies of swine flu in Jamnagar, 4 new cases admitted


JAMNAGAR: One person succumbed to swine flu while four new cases of the disease were admitted to Jamnagar's Guru Govindsinh ( GG) hospital in the past 48 hours, authorities said on Wednesday.

According to hospital sources, Damyanti Nanani, 60, a resident of Jamnagar, died at the hospital at 9.30 pm. She had been admitted two days ago and tested positive for the disease on Tuesday morning.

This apart, four swine flu positive patients were admitted to the swine flu isolation ward of the hospital. Two of them 30-year-old woman from Sikka village of the taluka and a 48-year-old man from Jamnagar are reportedly in a serious condition. A 35-year-old man from Porbandar and a 25-year-old woman from Reliance colony in Dewalia are also under treatment, hospital sources said.

One more swine flu death in city

SURAT: One more person has lost life to the dreaded swine flu in the city on Thursday taking the total number of deaths in the second phase of the disease outbreak after June 15, 2010 to eight.

An 18-year-old female patient, Pooja Nai, a resident of Dindoli, expired at 4 am after a brief treatment of two days in SMIMER Hospital. With this Surat city has witnessed 186 suspected cases out which 22 tested positive and eight succumbed to the H1N1 virus.

Six test positive for H1N1


VADODARA: Six patients tested positive for H1N1 virus in the city on Thursday. While four are admitted to SSG Hospital, two are undergoing treatment at private hospitals in the city.

Meanwhile, SSG's isolation ward is full with 21 patients admitted, 16 of which have already tested positive for swine flu. Looking at the increase in the cases in last couple of days, SSG Hospital authorities are planning to create extra facility of 30-bed in its gynaecology department's ward number 11 in case of new admissions. The 21-bed facility created for treating swine flu patients in medical nursing home in SSG Hospital is full.

On Thursday, four patients admitted at SSG tested positive that include 30-year old man from Makarpura, a 17-year-old girl residing in Channi, 67-year-old woman from Harni-Warasiya Ring Road and another 25-year-old youth. The two others admitted in private hospitals are a woman aged 27 in Spandan and another 65-year-old woman at Metro Hospital.

2 women die of H1N1 in 48 hrs

RAJKOT: A woman with symptoms of swine flu died here at Civil Hospital within few minutes of her arrival on Friday. In the past 48 hours, the swine flu ward at the hospital has witnessed two deaths, incidentally both being women, due to H1N1.

According to hospital authorities, patient Rama Rathod, 52, was brought here from the temple town of Somnath in Veraval after she developed flu-like symptoms. "However, before her throat swab samples could be taken for testing, the victim died. Her samples have been taken for the test, the report of which is expected to be H1N1 positive," said an official from the hospital.

The swine flu ward in the hospital, which has recorded 16 H1N1 positive patients out of 21 suspected cases so far, witnessed the deaths of two women on Wednesday. Patients identified as Ruksana Rafiq, 25, from Churavad Chowk and Gajarba Ajitsinh, 50, from Kukaswada area died of swine flu on Wednesday night. The hospital also received five fresh H1N1 suspected cases on Wednesday, whose test reports are awaited.

Two more die of swine flu in Jamnagar

Jamnagar, Aug 27 (PTI) Two more persons succumbed to swine flu at a hospital today taking the toll in the deadly disease to four in past six weeks here, health officials said.
Kasam Hasanbhai (48) and Jarina Umarbhai (30) were undergoing treatment for H1N1 infection in the G G hospital here. Both of them died today.
Meanwhile, three more persons who have tested positive for swine flu are undergoing treatment in the special ward created for such patients at the hospital, the officials said.

AHMEDABAD: Experts have said that the rising swine flu deaths in the state can be attributed to two major factors. Firstly, patients do not take their fever, cough and cold seriously and secondly, doctors are still not actively prescribing anti-virals.

Swine flu director of the state Dr Kamlesh Upadhyaya, who has trained over 7,000 doctors in the past year all over the state, says that most patients who have succumbed to swine flu in the state were referred to Civil Hospital and other public hospitals too late.

"Majority of the patients are referred to public and other big hospitals are when they have already developed severe pneumonia or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. In ARDS, it is difficult to revive patients," said Upadhyaya.

According to him, it has been noted that most doctors are still not prescribing anti-viral drugs which are approved for swine flu. Antibiotics are prescribed routinely. However, most doctors are still not actively considering prescription of anti-virals to patients who show classic symptoms like high grade fever, cough and sore throat if they do not show any signs of bacterial infection.

"Once pneumonia sets in, one does not know which patient will develop ARDS or not. A number of patients recover from swine flu but there are also people who are dying of it. We need to give medication to ensure that young lives are not lost," Upadhyaya added.

In Gujarat, only 30 per cent deaths have occurred in the high risk group while the rest 70 per cent were young people who were otherwise hale and hearty. Majority deaths have occurred in the age group of 15-65.

Swine flu cases increase in August

AHMEDABAD: There has been a sudden spurt in the number of swine flu cases in the city with at least four deaths recorded in the month of August. This has been the highest number of cases in the last four months. In the city's rural outskirts too, on Friday two cases of swine flu were reported from Karakthal and Dholka area. The contacts of these swine flu cases have been kept under watch.

A clear pattern that has emerged is that swine flu cases have a tendency to increase in August, when the rains begin to subside. If it was 54 cases last year in August with four deaths it is 33 cases and exactly four deaths in August this year too. This has led health authorities to gear up surveillance and awareness activities.

"For the last three months the H1N1 virus had subsided but has shown a sudden increase in August. Swine flu first entered the city during mid July last year when there were just seven cases initially. In July this year, we have recorded just two cases with single death. There is a clear pattern which is emerging now. In the last two days a total of seven positive cases have been detected in the city," says a senior health official in Gandhinagar.

3 more succumb to H1N1

VADODARA: Swine flu claimed three lives in the city, including a 20-year-old pregnant woman from Halol, on Tuesday night. A 24-year-old woman, who had delivered a baby at SSG Hospital some days back, too, succumbed to the virus besides a 32-year-old resident from Bharuch.

Parvati Gosai (20) from Halol was undergoing treatment at SSG since Monday. She was seven months pregnant. Harnish Patel (32) from Bharuch was admitted at a private hospital in the city.

Chhaya Naayi, residing in Gorwa area of the city, was first brought to Bhailal Amin Hospital. She was referred to SSG as suspected swine flu patient on August 17. Her sample report confirmed her to be H1N1 positive on August 18. She was admitted in the isolation ward, where she delivered a baby girl on August 24. The baby was delivered normally and subsequently discharged from the hospital after no symptoms of swine flu virus were found.

Swine flu: VMC spreads awareness in wards

With the increase in the number of swine flu cases in the city, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has decided to take preventive measures to check the spread of the deadly virus.

Though the health department has given the responsibility only to the district civil hospital, with the increase in the cases, the civic body has decided to take certain preventive measures at its level.

Medical officers in every ward have been notified to submit details on the health situations daily.

?Medical officers have been asked to coordinate with the private practitioners to take details on the swine flu and fever cases, and other patients with symptoms similar to swine flu. The details will mostly be taken from the general physicians, paediatricians and gynaecologists,? said Mukesh Vaidya, assistant medical officer, VMC.

The VMC?s health department will also be taking up awareness drives in the city as preventive measures. ?Last year, similar actions were taken during the outbreak of H1N1 virus. We intend to take up awareness programmes like taking up Bhavai performances in the city,? said Sharma.

Valsad woman tests H1N1 positive


SURAT: The total number of H1N1 positive cases in the second spell of the disease outbreak in the city has risen to 27, with one more patient being diagnosed as swine flu positive.

District panchayat health department officials said on September 2 and 3, hospitals in the city registered two patients who were suspected to be infected with the virus. The patients were admitted to Mahavir and Apple Hospitals in the city. A 52-year-old female patient from Dharmapur in Valsad district, who was referred from Purnima Clinic of the town, tested positive for H1N1 virus. She was admitted on Thursday and is receiving treatment in an isolated ward of Apple Hospital.

With this, the total number of suspected cases of swine flu in the city since 15 June, when the virus surfaced for the second time, has gone up to 205. The city has also reported eight deaths due to the virus.

Mentally challenged children brought to SSG for checkup


VADODARA: Given the increase in swine flu cases in the city, four mentally challenged children from Home for Mentally Challenged and Destitute Children (HMDC) were brought to SSG Hospital for checkup to rule out swine flu. These children were down with cold, cough and fever and were brought along with 26 other residents from HMDC for routine medical examination.

After examination, doctors negated the chances of their being infected with the virus and sent them back. "We take these students for regular medical checkup at SSG. Four of them were suffering from cold, cough and fever, so we thought of getting them checked just to ensure that these were not swine flu symptoms. All of them were brought back to the resident school and none of them was admitted," an official from HMDC K N Patel said.

Pregnant woman from Halol dies of H1N1


VADODARA: Swine flu claimed the 10th life in the city on Sunday since it resurfaced after the onset of monsoon. A 25-year-old seven-month pregnant woman, who tested positive for H1N1 on Saturday, died on Sunday morning.

Rajeshri Bharwad, resident of Indral village in Halol, was brought to SSG Hospital on Friday as a suspected swine flu patient. Her reports that came on Saturday confirmed her to be positive for H1N1 virus. Bharwad died on Sunday morning and later cremated at Khaswadi crematorium.

Not only is the swine flu death toll steadily rising, the number of the patients testing positive for the virus too have gone up. On Sunday, seven more tested positive for swine flu with one of them being a 24-year-old eight-month pregnant woman from Karjan.

Out of seven positive cases, five are females. Six of them are admitted to SSG while one patient is undergoing treatment at Global Baroda Hospital. There are around 10 patients admitted in the isolation ward created for swine flu patients. Among those admitted also includes a pregnant woman who has been hospitalised for 12 days now.

One more tests positive for swine flu

SURAT: One more swine flu positive case was reported from city hospital on Wednesday. A 38-year-old man from Bhatkor in Mangrol taluka of Surat was admitted to Dumaswala Hospital of the city a couple of days ago His tests confirmed him positive for the disease.

A suspected patient admitted to BAPS hospital was reported negative. With this, a total of 211 suspected patients have been admitted to city hospitals, of which 29 were diagnosed positive and 10 have died since the second round of H1N1 resurfaced June 15 this year.

Vadodara: In an attempt to keep a check on the increasing number of swine flu cases from the rural and tribal talukas, the district health authorities have initiated training programmes for private practitioners at the village and taluka levels.


It has been a year since the H1N1 virus had first surfaced, but doctors at the village level are still struggling to identity patients who have contracted the virus, and provide them the immediate medication.


The Vadodara district health department has now decided to train doctors on identifying and treating such patients.


Dr R V Patel, Reproductive and Child Healthcare (RCH) Officer, health department,Vadodara, said: ?Initially the virus was found to have affected people only in the cities, but now it has spread to the villages as well. But, we still find that the village doctors are ignorant on identifying and categorising patients with H1N1 virus at the initial stages and treating them accordingly or immediately refer them to the civil hospitals.?


At present, the district health officials are carrying out training programmes at the peripheral talukas of Vadodara, including Padra, Savli, Karjan and Waghodia.


Similar training programmes will be carried out at the tribal blocks.


?We have been instructing them on the symptoms of swine flu and how to identify such patients. The doctors then have to categorise the patient as per the seriousness of the case. We have also instructed them to put the patient on treatment immediately if it so warrants,? said Vijay Birla, Epidemic Medical Officer, Vadodara.


In the last three months, since the virus resurfaced, a large number of cases referred to SSG Hospital were from the rural and tribal blocks of Vadodara district.


Most of the patients, said authorities at SSG Hospital, were referred to them at a critical condition, and the patients could not be saved.


?To keep a check on the death rate due to swine flu, we have also given license to at least one medical store in every taluka which can sell Tamiflu drugs prescribed by an MBBS doctor. Medicines have also been provided at the Community Healthcare Centres,? Birla added.


Pregnant woman dies of swine flu
A 22-year-old pregnant woman died of swine flu on Wednesday. Ranjanben Parmar was a resident of Kankapura village of Borsad taluka in Anand district. She was admitted to a city-based private hospital on August 31.


Doctors confirmed that she was in a critical stage at the time of admission. She was four months pregnant.


Besides, two other people have tested positive for swine flu. They include a 54-year-old man from Rajpipla and a 52-year-old woman from Gotri. Both were admitted to private hospitals.

H1N1 Claims Two More In State

A 45?yearold resident in the city admitted to SSG Hospital succumbed to Swine Flu late on Wednesday. Chunilal Vanzara, residing in Manjalpur area, was admitted on Tuesday as a suspected Swine Flu. His samples tested positive for the virus and on Wednesday evening he succumbed during the course of treatment. Swine flu in the last three days has claimed three lives in the city.

In Jamnagar, a pregnant woman succumbed to H1N1 at the swine flu ward of Guru Govindsinh (GG) Hospital here on Thursday. According to the hospital authorities, the patient, identified as Daksha Lalji, 24, resident of Gulabnagar area of the city, was seven months pregnant when she was diagnosed as H1N1 positive. She breathed her last at 3.30pm. "Daksha is the fifth pregnant women to have succumbed to swine flu. There have been 11 swine flu deaths reported in the past one?and?ahalf?months," said an official from the hospital.

H1N1 Patient Delivers Twins, One Dies

A Swine Flu positive pregnant woman at SSG Hospital in the city delivered twin girls on Tuesday. While one of them died after birth, another is doing fine and has been kept isolated from the mother.

The patient was referred to SSG from a private hospital on September 17 as a suspected H1N1 case. She was in her last month of pregnancy when she was admitted to the hospital. She delivered the twin girls through Caesarean, of which one died right after birth. The other child is doing fine and the mother is still under treatment.

There are two more pregnant women admitted to SSG who have tested positive for Swine Flu virus. Both of them are in their eighth month of pregnancy.

Meanwhile, a four–year–old girl from Sankheda who was suspected to be afflicted with the Chandipura virus and admitted to SSG Hospital died on Tuesday. Manisha Baria was brought to SSG on September 18 and now her samples have been sent to Pune to ascertain the cause of the death.

Swine flu claims one more in city

SURAT: Swine flu claimed one more life in the city taking the toll in the second phase of the season to 13. A 62-year-old woman, Kanchan Kukadia, of Varachha in Surat city succumbed to her illness on Saturday night. Till date, the city has recorded 32 positive cases of H1N1 since June 15, 2010 when the virus surfaced again.

Four more new suspected cases were also reported in city hospitals taking their number to 248. The mortality rate in the second phase has been less than 10 per cent, but of the diagnosed 32 positive cases, death of 13 takes this mortality rate to over 30 per cent which is a worry for health officials.
