5 H1N1 deaths in 48 hours

RAJKOT: The swine flu death graph is rising at an alarming rate in Rajkot. Five more people died on Friday and Saturday. Since June 22, when the first suspected case was reported in the city, the death toll has been steadily climbing. The toll as per sources is 20. A total 547 patients were treated in outpatient door department, created for swine flu patients at Rajkot's Pandit Dindayal Hospital, control room in charge of the hospital Dr U Mehta said.

On December 25, after a one-and-half-year-old baby died in the morning, a 50-year-old woman succumbed to H1N1 in the night.

On December 26, four-month-old baby Chintan Anilkumar, admitted on Wednesday from Kankot area, Rajesh D, 19, brought from Halwad in Surendranagar district on Friday died in the civil hospital. Rekha Turi, 40, of Jamsalaya in Jamnagar district died in a private hospital in Rajkot. Since Rekha's case was the first one reported in Jamsalaya, her house has been sealed and all preventive measures are being taken.

From December 17 to 24, 10 patients have died. At present, 36 of them are under treatment, of which 26 are positive cases and reports for 10 are awaited from Ahmedabad.

The death figures have jolted the Rajkot administration into action. Many are blaming the lax attitude of the administration for high number of deaths. The first death was reported on August 25, but special outpatient door treatment for swine flu patients was started a month later on September 10, a source said.

Meanwhile, more doctors have been appointed to tackle the situation since last week. "A chief doctor, two residents, two assistant professor-level doctors, one anaesthetist and extra nurses have been put on duty per shift," said Dr Mehta.

In Rajkot, till date, 784 patients were given preventive treatment. According to sources, out of samples sent for confirmation, 88 per cent samples were positive. Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) health officer Dr Mitesh Bhanderi said, 1,050 doctors were given special training on swine flu guidelines.

Ahmedabad: With five new swine flu deaths reported in Gujarat on Tuesday, the H1N1 death toll in the state has reached 100.

Four of the five deaths had taken place earlier but they were confirmed as H1N1 cases on Tuesday. The total death toll includes the eight patients from Rajasthan who died in Gujarat hospitals.

Another 16 positive H1N1 cases were detected on Tuesday, taking the total number of positive cases in the state to 647. These days, new cases are detected in double digits daily.

The Ahmedabad Medical Association and top health officials of the state will be meeting on Wednesday to discuss the swine flu crisis. AMA members said they are thinking of asking the state government to allow testing for swine flu in private labs.

They said that as the test is expensive, they will try to find some way to make the test cheaper if the government allows testing in private laboratories.

Principal secretary, family welfare and medical education, Rajesh Kishore, said that the state government had asked medical associations in the state to contact their members and tell them to deal with the pandemic more aggressively. He further said that the government is buying more ventilators for government hospitals.

?We have already issued licenses to 122 chemists in the state to sell anti-swine flu tablets so that people can have easy excess to the medicines.?

With four new swine flu deaths reported on Wednesday, toll from the influenza in the state has reached 104.

Eight more patients belonging to Rajasthan who had come to Ahmedabad for treatmentdied, taking the total death figure in the state to 112.

Besides, 20 new swine flu positive cases were identified on Wednesday. This takes the figure up to 667. The health and family welfare department informed. The positive cases have been identified in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhuj, Jamnaagar, Bhavnagar, Palanpur, Himatnagar and Karamsad.

The Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) held a meeting with the state health officials and an official from National Rural health Mission (NRHM) was also present there.

In the meeting it was decided that the doctors can't quarantine all the suspected patients in hospitals. However, what they can do is they can keep a close watch on A-type patients, while B-type patients need to be given anti-swine flu medicine (Tamiflu).

The people who fall under A-type category just need to be under doctor's observation. They are less vulnerable to the virus.

Whereas patients who fall under B-type are more likely to spread the virus. The C-type are the ones who needs immediate indoor medical treatment.

Rajkot to have swine flu testing laboratory

The city will soon have a laboratory for testing swine flu samples, Gujarat Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said today.

Talking to mediapersons here, he said Rajkot is a medical hub for Saurashtra and Kutch regions. A large number of people from these regions come to the city for treatment and therefore the government has decided to start a laboratory with bio-safety grade hospital here, the Minister said.

The laboratory will start functioning within a week, Vyas said, adding the facility will have experts to conduct swine flu test.

Currently, samples from here are being sent to Ahmedabad for H1N1 test, which delays swine flu treatment, he added.
