PALANPUR: An outbreak of diarrhoea in Dhanera town of Banaskantha district has led to four deaths, while at least 200 patients have been hospitalized. Two of the dead are women.

Sources said lack of health facilities in slum areas of the town has left more than 200 people severely affected. People have been consuming water from Sipu dam, which is not chlorinated. The water levels have hit a low due to delayed monsoon...

Ahmedabad: In the month of June alone, 25 cases of cholera were registered in various hospitals of the city, taking the total number of cases to 45 since January.

Looking at the alarming rise in various water and vector-borne diseases, Congress has blamed the ruling party BJP for its failures in health-care system, particularly in controlling diseases in city.

It should be noted that in 2011, 57 cases of cholera were reported in the entire year,

Suspected cholera claims five lives in Banaskantha dist

Banaskantha district?s Dhanera town and nine surrounding villages have been declared ?cholera-hit? after five people died there over the last one week and 222 were admitted to hospitals with symptoms of diarrhea.

District Collector J M Vohra issued a notification to this effect on Wednesday after it was confirmed that the five died of diarrheal diseases. One of them was tested positive for cholera.

Ahmedabad A day after Dhanera was declared ?cholera-hit?, 25 more persons were hospitalised with diarrheal symptoms in this town of Banaskantha district on Thursday.
Health authorities sent back, with medicines and advice, 69 others who suspected they were suffering from the illness.

The situation in cholera-hit Dhanera town of Banaskantha district appears to be slowly getting back to normal with only 19 fresh hospitalisation on Friday.

As many as 25 were hospitalised with diarrheal symptoms on Thursday, adding to the 222 indoor patients from the week preceding that.

Epidemiology officials from the state?s Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department said a cleanliness drive on the border town?s food stalls has also been mounted and is being led by the sub-divisional magistrate there.

Boy dies of cholera in Dantiwada village

PALANPUR: A three-year-old boy died of cholera in Dantiwada village of Banaskantha on Saturday. Rahul Babu Bhil of Bajrangpura Patia locality had earlier been taken to a witch doctor by his family members. He was rushed to a hospital only after his condition had worsened and it was during the course of treatment that he succumbed.

Now, suspected diarrhoea cases surface in Navsari

At least 105 people, 18 of them on Monday, have contracted suspected diarrheal diseases in an area adjoining Navsari city even as the health situation in Banaskantha?s cholera-hit Dhanera town is almost back to normal, with only one case of diarrhea being reported there on Monday.

Dr Dinkar Raval, deputy director of the Health and Family Welfare Department?s epidemiology division, however said that cholera has not yet been confirmed for the Navsari cases. Samples have been sent to a government laboratory and results are expected by Tuesday morning, he said.

Only a 18 of those complaining of diarrheal symptoms are serious cases, with the rest suffering from minor symptoms.

Samples taken from a patient in Navsari after the suspected diarrhea outbreak tested positive for cholera on Tuesday.

This makes Navsari the state?s second urban area, after Dhanera in Banaskantha district, to be hit by cholera within two weeks.

Meanwhile, 27 residents of Navsari?s Mithali Nagar extension area were hospitalised with diarrheal symptoms today, taking the number of suspected cases to 132.

With no new diarrhea cases registered on Thursday, the cholera outbreak in Sabarkantha?s Dhanera town has been declared as over, according to a top health official.

The situation in Navsari also appears to be improving, with the five cases reported on Thursday being diagnosed with ?simple gastroentisis? and not ?effortless diarrhea? (a term used to describe cholera).
