Health Alert: Suspected cases of measles reported in several health facilities in Kindia
KINDIA – Several suspected cases of measles were reported a few days ago in health facilities in the Kindia prefecture. This childhood illness was detected in health centers within the urban commune. The initial alerts were raised by officials at these health facilities.
According to Dr. Bakary Kourouma, head of the disease prevention section at the Kindia Prefectural Health Directorate (DPS), this highly contagious disease generally manifests as a high fever accompanied by symptoms such as a runny nose, conjunctivitis (red eyes), cough, and a rash. It primarily affects unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children.
“ Two weeks ago, we recorded suspected cases of measles in the Kindia prefecture. Why are we talking about suspected cases? Because we, as health workers, make a clinical diagnosis. It is the laboratory that, after analysis, confirms whether it is actually measles or not.”
Children presented with signs and symptoms resembling measles. Samples were taken. So far, among the samples analyzed in the laboratory, we have received the result of one case that tested positive. We can therefore say that in Kindia, we have recorded, for the moment, one confirmed case of measles.
Other suspected cases have been reported in some health areas. Samples have been taken and sent to the laboratory in Conakry, pending results ,” he explained.
The official reiterated that measles is a vaccine-preventable disease. " It shouldn't occur if children are properly vaccinated. These cases could be explained by the fact that some children were not vaccinated or received only one dose. However, two doses are necessary for adequate protection."
The first dose is administered from 9 months of age, and the second booster dose between 15 and 18 months. A child who has only received one dose is not fully immunized. An unvaccinated child is at risk of contracting the disease, as measles is highly contagious ,” the official explained.
Dr. Bakary Kourouma explains that measures have already been taken: “ We conducted an active search in the community to identify any similar cases. Without waiting for an official outbreak declaration, we organized a local response. We went to the home of the infected child and identified all the children within a 300-meter radius of the residence. All of them have been vaccinated.”
We are continuing active community searches to identify other suspected cases, collect samples, and send them to the laboratory . At the same time, we are raising awareness among parents about the importance of full vaccination, meaning both doses against measles.
Finally, he calls on parents to be vigilant: " As soon as signs such as fever, the appearance of small spots on the body, red eyes, runny nose, cough or breathing difficulties appear in a child, they must be taken immediately to the nearest health center.
Measles is characterized by a high fever, small, grain-like spots, red eyes, a runny nose, watery eyes, and sometimes difficulty breathing. There's no need to panic, but you should seek medical help promptly .
