Dr Sakoba K??ta on the epidemiological situation in Guinea: "the hour is serious"

Two potentially fatal epidemics are currently shaking Guinea. The coronavirus (which is a global pandemic) has been joined by the Ebola hemorrhagic fever, which recently resurfaced in Gou?ck?, N'Z?r?kor? prefecture, in the forest region of Guinea. In the morning of this Friday, the Director General of the ANSS, Dr Sakoba K??ta, announced to Guineans that the hour is really serious ...

During his press conference, Dr Sakoba K??ta, the Director General of the National Agency for Health Security, called on the Guinean populations to be more vigilant. Beyond these two major epidemics, Dr. Sakoba recalled that we already have an epidemic of measles and another of yellow fever ...

"We will take stock of the situation so that every Guinean realizes that the hour is serious. But, what I see with us, when the lion returns to Guinea, the first Guinean that he will devour until he gets to the second, the latter thinks that it is the business of the first; whereas if you don't help him, after devouring him, it will be your turn. So, that's why before this turn happens, we have to organize ourselves to prevent other victims. When the fire is there, if you do not help your neighbor to put it out at his place, it is sure that in a few minutes, it will happen to you ... And, at this critical moment in our country, all communications must go in the direction of changing the behavior of our populations to allow the control of these two epidemics ”, introduced Dr Sakoba K??ta.

According to the boss of the ANSS, there was no confirmed case of Ebola virus disease yesterday; however, six suspected people were still admitted to the N'Z?r?kor? care center. The total of confirmed cases is still 5, since the beginning, with 2 cured, one of whom was hospitalized in Conakry and the second in N'Z?r?kor?. Two other people are currently hospitalized in N'Z?r?kor? and unfortunately there has been one death. The total therefore remains at four. Currently, there are a total of 8 people hospitalized (2 positive people and 6 suspected people, whose results are pending) and 460 people vaccinated.

The good news announced by the DG of the ANSS is the arrival, yesterday evening (Thursday, February 25, 2021) of the second batch of vaccine against Ebola. “It's 8 thousand 640 doses. Which makes the twenty thousand doses that Guinea has received. And, yesterday, people vaccinated nearly 180 more people in N'Z?r?kor? and 60 in Conakry. This makes 465 people who have already taken the vaccine against Ebola (in Conakry and in the interior of the country). We have just delivered new molecules that have shown their effectiveness against Ebola in the DRC so that the two positive cases that remain can benefit from this new treatment as of today, ”said Dr. Sakoba K?ita.

Kankan: Despite Ebola, many citizens are leaving for N'z?r?kor?

feb 28 2021

In this period of health crisis, the Kankan-N'Z?r?kor? line is operating at full capacity. The observation made this Friday, February 26, 2021, in several bus stations in Kankan is ample proof.
At the independent bus station of Kankan located in the district of the same name, from 11 a.m., taxis and minibuses crowded with passengers and luggage, leave the parking lane in the direction of N'z?r?kor?, the epicenter of the Ebola virus. and with the knowledge of the union authorities at the station.

Failing to suspend the line, they would rather have reduced to believe El hadji Abdoulaye B?ret?, fourth coordinator of independent unions.
“In any case, since the Ebola situation was declared, the number of vehicles that go into the forest per day has been considerably reduced. Otherwise before four minus buses and five where six taxis left in the forest per day, ”he told us.

At the large regional bus station occupied by the national transport union, located in the aviation district on the morning of this Saturday, February 27, 2021, in addition to the many bush taxis and minibuses packed to the brim which leave every day for Nz?r?kor?, the officials, also tell us recorded the arrival of a good ten.

To tell the truth, people don't even believe this Ebola story. Customers and drivers alike, nobody cares, nobody cares what. So here, it's routine, despite people saying that there is Ebola in Nz?r?kor?, we receive and send passengers at any time. And so far, we haven't encountered any problem in that. But they could well be that the senior officials of the station make arrangements in the days to come ”, told us one of the administrators of this station who requested anonymity.

In addition, it should be noted that in these two different stations that we visited, the preventive measures are downright trampled on the ground. No hand washing kit, hardly anyone wears a mask and the arriving and departing passengers are huddled together, like in a tin of sardines. Even in the trunks, there are passengers.

Some passengers interviewed such as Bl? Mogoboly Daniel, a civil engineer, will tell us that they feel no fear of going to Nz?r?kor? even if it is the nest of the Ebola virus.
By the way, it is the will of Allah. We know that Ebola claims many victims in Nz?r?kor?. But this does not mean that the population should not travel, ”he defended.
Same story or almost for Mohamed Cond?, teacher of his state.

Coming from Kouroussa, it stopped at Kankan before heading for N'z?r?kor?. Without a mask and crowded with several other people in his taxi, he says he is not afraid.
“I am not at all afraid. It is because once I arrive at my destination, I will always respect the barrier measures, avoid too many contacts to protect myself, ”he said.

'Asked for his reaction to the situation, we were told that the boss of the national transport union in Kankan, Moussa Djan Cond? "is seriously ill", and that no one other than him is empowered to comment.
Note also that, like these two stations visited, the findings are practically the same in the other stations of Kankan.:tiphat:https://www.guineenews.org/kankan-malgre-ebola-de-nombreux-citoyens-partent-pour-nzerekore-constats/

Ebola virus disease Guinea

17 Cases
7 Deaths

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) declared in Guinea
on 14 February 2021 continues, with one new confirmed case
reported in N’Zerekore on 28 February 2021, in a community death
(unknown contact). A safe and dignified burial was performed. A
suspected patient from Bayle is still waiting for results.

As of 28 February 2021, there is a total of 17 cases (13 confirmed
and 4 probable) and seven deaths (case fatality ratio 41.2%).
Currently, only one health district is active (reporting at least one
confirmed cases) and six health districts are on alert (have at
least one contact) out of 38.

A total of 495 (99%) contacts out of 498 are being followed up.
There is an ongoing search for three contacts who are lost to
follow-up.

PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIONS

Full incident management has been implemented in Guinea,
with an epidemiologist deployed from the WHO Regional
Office.

A supporting mission is in place in N’Zerekore to strengthen
coordination and response pillars; a local alert system has
been implemented, as well as active case finding and followup
of resource mobilization (CERF, ECHO funds).

Vaccination has started, with a cumulative total of 1097
people vaccinated, including 164 high-risk contacts, 758
contacts-of-contacts and 175 probable contacts, including
314 healthcare workers.

Case management in affected regions is being supported
by partners, and safe and dignified burial teams are being
trained by the Red Cross.

One confirmed case has been discharged as recovered after
two negative control tests; 8 confirmed and one suspected
case are currently hospitalized in the Epidemic Diseases
Treatment Centre in N’Zerekore; 7 out of 8 confirmed cases
have received Regeneron treatment.

Risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) is
underway, with a meeting with religious leaders and priests
in churches in N’Zerekore briefed on sensitization; a briefing
was held on training modules for journalists and other
stakeholders in RCCE activities.

SITUATION INTERPRETATION

Health teams in Guinea are acting rapidly to trace the path of the
virus and curb further infections and a full incident management
system has been set up. Challenges are inadequate coordination
in N’Zerekore and community resistance to response measures,
which require rapid management to facilitate access to
communities for implementation of public health actions, which is
being delayed by this resistance, including vaccination activities.
There is an urgent need for additional funds to allow recruitment
of additional staff to strengthen field operations, particularly in
N’Zerekore.

"Maman Lucie", 51, the first victim of the Ebola resurgence in Guinea

Published on : 03/03/2021 - 23:40

Almost 5 years after the end of the first Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the virus resurfaced in the forest region in the south of the country. At least 8 people have died out of around fifteen recorded cases. Lucie, a 51-year-old nurse, died on January 27 at the Nz?r?kor? regional hospital. She is the index patient, that is to say the first known case of the current resurgence. At the Goueck? medical center where she worked, she was a very popular personality that everyone called “mum”.

With our special correspondent in Goueck?, Carol Valade

On his phone, Doctor Aboudlaye Koli, chief medical officer of Goueck?, points to the portrait of “Maman Lucie” adorned with the words “RIP”. " She liked to say, 'I make myself available to the community as long as the community needs me .' She was playing the role of mom. She approached everyone like a mother. "

Cecile Loua, technical health assistant. “She was a colleague but we called her mom. She did the childbirth, she did the planning for the women. She loved everyone. Cecile Loua starts to cry.

Figure of the parish, Lucie was a pious woman indicates the vicar of Goueck?, Father Gabriel Lamah. “ The way of treating, of helping, of helping others can give the title of mother to such a woman. On the day of her funeral, her husband testified that even at midnight, his wife was obliged to tell him: they have just called me, I must leave to take care of a sick person. She dedicated her whole life to the cause of others. "

Ebola is transmitted through the fluids of patients and the advice it gave still resonates today. “ I think washing your hands is interesting: those were her words on Tuesday and Friday, and she always said it with a smile. "

As in the previous epidemic, caregivers are paying the heaviest price.

Guinea: resistance to the fight against Ebola remains high, according to the Red Cross

Update 06.03.2021 at 13:00
By Nina LARSON
AFP

As Ebola reappears in Guinea, measures to try to contain the deadly virus are encountering resistance from the populations, warned a Red Cross official in an interview with AFP.

"What we are seeing on the ground is a lot of resistance within the communities and also religious reluctance," explained Emanuele Capobianco, Director of Health and Care within the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cross Societies. Red Crescent (IFRC), Friday.

This is not surprising for the doctor: "Ebola is a disease which scares people. It is a terrible disease which kills a lot".

In fact, the virus is transmitted through bodily fluids and the death rate is high, usually around 50%.

The reappearance of the disease in Guinea, following deaths at the end of January, was noted in mid-February and since then, the authorities and international actors have mobilized strongly to stop possible contagions, isolate and treat the sick and launch a campaign. vaccination.

So far, 18 cases have been reported. Fourteen cases are confirmed including 4 people who died, according to the latest figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday.

WHO sees Ebola risk as "very high" for Guinea's neighbours

By Emma Farge

3 MIN READ

GENEVA (Reuters) - World Health Organization officials said on Friday the risk of an Ebola outbreak spreading from Guinea to its neighbours was ?very high? and that some neighbouring countries were not prepared for outbreaks or for future vaccination campaigns.

WHO?s Guinea representative, Georges Alfred Ki-Zerbo, told a virtual briefing that 18 cases had been identified and four of those people had died.

.....
?There are six neighbouring countries to Guinea and we conducted an assessment of readiness. Two of the countries are not ready and one is borderline and there are three countries more or less ready,? the WHO?s Regional Emergency Director Abdou Salam Gueye said by videoconference from Guinea.

He said none of the neighbouring countries was completely ready to start Ebola vaccinations, should they be required, and that there were not enough vaccines doses available in any case to begin vaccinating preventively....:tiphat:https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...for-guineas-neighbours-idUSKBN2AX0VS?rpc=401&

Ebola: Vehicles leave Kankan for N'z?r?kor? despite the risks

By Kababachir.Com
]Last updated Mar 6, 2021

The Republic of Guinea is currently struck by an unprecedented health crisis since it is facing what we would call a duo of epidemics, namely Covid-19 and Ebola. The latter recently reappeared in Gou?ck? (N'z?r?kor? prefecture).
In Kankan, according to a report visit carried out at the independent bus station on Thursday, public transport vehicles on the Kankan-N'z?r?kor? section are operating as usual, despite all the risks of contamination present in forest Guinea , the epicenter of the disease.
All the same, the passengers who board the taxis for this region, do not seem to breathe the air of fear. This is the case of Moustapha Ciss?:
"It is true that the Ebola virus exists in the country, but that does not mean that the population cannot move, you can move if you know you have needs, but the decision of the government must be respected by all of us, so when traveling we must respect the provisions to avoid this disease ?he said.
Although the Kankan-N'z?r?kor? line is functional, the number of vehicles traveling on the said section has decreased a little since the discovery of Ebola disease, confides this passenger who asks for anonymity:
"People come but it's not like before because of this disease and it even affects transport, anyway we are there, at this time if, per day two mini buses and three taxis can leave Kankan for Nz?r?kor?. , if not before four minus buses and five or six taxis could leave "He hammered before suggesting that:" I am not afraid, it is by this that I will always respect the barrier measures, avoid contact and protect yourself ?.
According to the report, no screening device for potential cases of Ebola has been set up in this bus station as in several others in Nabaya.

An angry soldier, brother of an Ebola victim who died on Friday at the N'Z?r?kor? regional hospital, tried to burn down an isolation center installed at the headquarters of the Gou?ck? sub-prefecture.

Asked about this, this Monday, March 8, 2021, the Minister of Health Colonel R?my Lama, first returned to the facts before indicating that calm has returned to the isolation center in Gou?ck?.

? There is a soldier who lost his sister, according to him it was following the vaccination, but his sister was a contact who had been lost to follow-up. She had not been vaccinated, when she started showing symptoms at home, she was transferred here for the vaccination. Then she started a strong diarrhea with blood, her driver sent her to the treatment center, the next day she died. So for the military, his sister died because she was vaccinated. He revolted, he burned part of the tarpaulin, people put out the fires, you should know that it is very far from the CT-?pi, it is at the sub-prefecture in front of the platform?. calm has returned, things are going very well, ?he explained.

Remember that the soldier himself was a contact with the deceased victim, he is currently being followed at home by health workers.

Ebola in Gou?ck?: a soldier, potential contact case on the run, actively sought

By Mohamed Bangoura
For 19 minutes
His name is Aluice Haba and is said to be the main instigator of the fire at the Gou?ck? isolation center.

A soldier serving in the prefecture of Dabola, Aluice is the brother of the pregnant woman who died last week of the Ebola virus at the epidemiological treatment center of N'z?r?kor?.

The man allegedly had direct contact with his sister before her late hospitalization.

After the fire in the isolation center, his arrest and quarantine became more than a hot potato for the local authorities.

"He makes threats and nobody wants to take the risk of going to arrest him because he is a risk contact. A contingent of security forces had been deployed to Gou?ck? in order to dispel it to surrender, but nothing worked. No gendarme or health worker wants to take this risk because he does not want to cooperate. He expresses doubts about the circumstances of his sister's death. The problem no longer lies in his arrest after the fire of which he is the author. We want him to agree to quarantine himself for follow-up, ? said a municipal councilor.

At the last information, Aluice in the company of his accomplices in the fire would have left the city to take refuge in the bush. This refusal to cooperate worries the local authorities who fear a new chain of contamination.
