Avian flu is decimating entire farms in the Coyah area

By LEDJELY.COMFriday, May 20, 2022 at 3:36 PM

The government spoke about it in the Council of Ministers this Thursday, May 19. But the rather terse communication that was reserved for the subject was certainly below the damage that the bird flu virus causes among many farmers. In the Coyah area, by far the most affected, we are told that entire farms have been decimated. Leaving the farmers in disarray, because suddenly ruined.

Despite the magnitude of the losses they have suffered, the farmers do not seem to want to communicate on the subject. According to our information, in this, they would comply with an instruction from the Ministry of Agriculture and its services. This is how the rare few who agreed to tell us something about it absolutely requested anonymity. One of them just specified: “ For the moment, it is our colleagues located on the side of Wonkifong going towards Maférinyah who are the most affected ”. Another to add: “ It is true for the moment, those who evolve on the axis which leads to Kindia are spared. Similarly, those of Dubréka have not yet notified a case ”. And to contain the virus, the farmers stopped dating. " We even joined hands to stop a culled chicken delivery truck in the Enta neighborhood. To prevent the chickens in question, possibly contaminated, from returning to Conakry ,” a source told us.

But precisely, the story of this truck sufficiently illustrates the anguish in which the victimized farmers find themselves. Indeed, in order not to resolve the loss of all their chickens, “ some of our colleagues were quick to sell these chickens. But the risk was such that we stopped the process ”. According to our information, in some farms, all the chickens died. Veterinary services even intervened in incineration sessions, certainly in order to limit the risk of spreading the disease.

But assuming that we succeed in stemming the spiral, the victims are already asking questions: what fate will be reserved for them? Will they be compensated by the authorities? For the moment, no response. However, one of them finds that the option of compensation would only be a fair remedy. Especially since, he underlines: “ We think that this virus arrived in Guinea with the imported cells. We particularly suspect cells arriving from Morocco or Europe. However, more than once, we have warned of the risks associated with this import. Unfortunately, we weren't listened to ."

The first cases were notified, we are told, just after the Ramadan holiday, i.e. the first days of May.

Health alert: Avian flu is wreaking havoc in Coyah and Forécariah...

Guinea

FORÉCARIAH/COYAH-The situation is very serious! For the past two weeks, the bird flu disease has been wreaking havoc on several poultry farms located in Coyah and Forécariah, two prefectures, close to the Guinean capital, Conakry. Among the farmers, it's on the alert. The subject was debated on May 19 at the Council of Ministers. Faced with the extent of the disease, Mamoudou Nagalen Barry, expressed his deep concern.

Already several thousand hens have been killed by this disease on farms in Forécariah and Coyah. Questioned by our editorial staff, a victim farmer told us that the disease is far from being under control. According to this Farmer, the official results of the examinations on the disease are not yet available. However, we are talking about avian flu. But what type? The results of the samples taken and sent to Italy did not deliver their verdict.

A highly contagious variant

"The authorities took samples which were sent to Italy. Indeed, they confirmed that it is avian flu but there are several types. So they did not detect the variant first. But the variant which is there is highly pathogenic, because when it enters a farm, in the space of three days, it can finish decimating all the hens that are there" , he explained.

For the past ten days, the farmers have been witnessing a real disaster. The speed of spread of the disease is such that they are unable to make a precise exhaustive assessment of the losses suffered so far. However, what is certain, the devastation is significant.

"For the moment we do not know the number of hens who died. Before the arrival of the veterinary teams, there were many farms which were affected. But already, according to the estimates of each other, the hens which are dead before the arrival of the intervention teams are twice as high as the hens that have been slaughtered by the veterinary services. hens. They are all wearing coveralls. They grab the hens to put them in bags and then suffocate them. Then they dig holes to bury them ," the victim told us, before appealing to the authorities.

Havoc continues on farms

"We are asking the State to take steps like in other countries to compensate poultry farmers because the losses are enormous. Imagine, it takes nearly 100 million gnf to feed a farm of one thousand (1000) hens until the laying. And if we now have hundreds of thousands of hens, how much are we going to spend? I inform you that until now the disease continues to wreak havoc on the farms " warned this Farmer who requested anonymity.

8,639 hens slaughtered and 12,247 eggs crushed

According to the explanations of our informant, the teams of the veterinary services which are currently on the ground worked in eight (8) farms in total in several localities in Forécariah and Coyah. These are Wonkifon, Moribayah, Koulakoya and Kakoulimaya.

“Until yesterday Saturday May 21, 2022, the veterinary teams slaughtered 8,639 hens and destroyed 12,247 eggs. But the hens that had already died before the arrival of the team are not part of this number of 8,639. large-scale vaccination, consultations are underway because it is in the field of veterinary medicine and it is a first in Guinea" , added this Farmer.

During the Council of Ministers this week, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock shared his concerns about the threats posed by the outbreak of avian flu to food security and public health in Guinea.

Salon Mamoudou Nagnalen Barry, "the intervention of his teams made it possible to control the situation in Forécariah". But, on the other hand, he adds, "the crisis appears particularly acute in Coyah".

Questioned this Saturday, May 21, 2022 by Africaguinee.com, he announced a press release next Monday. "We will make a press release on Monday. And we are waiting for the results of the analysis which makes it possible to confirm or invalidate in an official and public way" , underlined the Minister of Livestock and Agriculture.

Avian flu: the confidences of Dr Idriss Doumbouya, National Director of Veterinary Services

CONAKRY-Bird flu has been raging in poultry farms in Coyah and Forecariah for more than two weeks. To date, the statistics provided by the competent services sufficiently prove that the situation is alarming. Already, 14,933 hens have been slaughtered and 17,919 eggs destroyed. What measures have the authorities taken to stem the spread of the epidemic? What is its magnitude? Your online daily, Africaguinee.com, interviewed the National Director of Veterinary Services Dr Mohamed Idriss Doumbouya.

AFRICAGUINEE.COM : For several weeks, bird flu has been wreaking havoc on several farms in Coyah and Forécariah. How did we get here ?

DR MOHAMED IDRISS DOUMBOUYA
: Veterinary services are massively deployed in the field. We left the investigation phase that we had to do with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of the Environment. By the way, it was on April 28 that we were alerted by a farmer who told us about mortalities on his farm. So we dispatched a team of veterinarians to the field to carry out the investigation and take samples to send them to Conakry. After analysis of these samples in our laboratories, we found that it was the (virus) H5. And, I remind you that as far as our laboratory is concerned, we don't have the kit for N, we only have the kit for H. So, after analysis, we found that H5 was positive. H5 is one of the three strains of influenza which are H5,

H5 and H7 are highly pathogenic and H9 is low pathogenic. And when we detected that, we sounded the alarm by organizing a joint Ministry of Health, Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture mission which visited the two infected areas in Moribayah who reported the first case to us and the Kakoulimayah area where a lady lost everything on her farm, more than 2000 hens. This is how our investigation teams visited all the farms that were concerned to take samples to find out what the source of the infection is. But seeing that mortality was increasing on some farms, we launched a response.

What measures are taken to contain the spread of this disease?

In the case of bird flu, the slightest suspicion, the only thing we can do is slaughter the hens and destroy the eggs and that is what we had to do in these areas. Our wish is that the avian flu is limited only in this zone. This is why the Ministry and the Directorate have deployed a team on the ground for more than a week. This team's mission is to identify all the farms in the infected areas with high mortality in order to cull and destroy them. And, we are doing so that the epidemic is managed in this area so that it does not spread throughout the country. At this time, we are awaiting results from our reference lab before declaring that we are in the outbreak.

Should we fear a white meat crisis in the country?

Today, the disease affects only three areas. Our wish is that the spread of the disease be limited so that all producers are not affected across the country. We are working to contain the disease in these three areas. If this is done, I think production will not be affected.

What is the extent of the damage since the onset of this disease?

To date, we are at 14,933 hens slaughtered and 17,919 eggs destroyed. We are in the process of counting the hens that have died from the disease, but we cannot give you the exact figure. But I think the number is around 25 to 30 thousand hens dead from the disease.

What advice do you have for farmers to limit the spread of this disease?

I invite farmers to strengthen security measures. By respecting the security measures, they will avoid bringing the virus into their farms. That is to say, stop making the personal moment from farm to farm. That they put disinfectants at the start of each farm to disinfect all the people and all the machines (vehicles or motorcycles) that will enter their farms, clean all the clothes that the farmers wear before entering the farms, avoid the movement of egg packaging in different farms. It is also necessary to systematically stop the exchange of egg cells from farm to farm.

To be continued…

Fight against avian flu in Coyah: between farmers' cries of heart and concrete measures to be taken

Posted By: Joani Millimono Last Update Thursday, May 26, 2022 At 10:10 Am

Since the beginning of this month of May 2022, Kakoulimayah farms in the sub-prefecture of Wonkifong in Coyah have recorded several thousand dead chickens due to the H5N1 avian flu disease, according to specialists. Alerted, the authorities are now hard at work to curb this disease.

On the morning of Wednesday May 25, a team from the National Directorate of Veterinary Services (DNSV) and the National Directorate of Food and Animal Production arrived at Koulimayah farms in Wonkifong sub-prefecture.

This mixed team proceeded to the preventive slaughter of chickens showing signs of the disease, to the incineration and especially to the disinfection of the farms.

Boubacar Dansoko, Fatoumata Sadio Diallo and Elhadj Sanoussy Diallo are all farm owners who have lost thousands of chickens and eggs. Today, they are asking for state aid to help them financially.

“ I lost more than 7 thousand chickens and 8 thousand eggs. I left everything in Europe to come and invest in my country. I employ over 60 people. If the state does not help us financially, we will be completely on the ground ,” said Sanoussy Diallo.

The distress situation is the same in the 12 farms visited by the joint team of veterinary services and animal protection.

For several weeks, suspicions of an epidemic of bird flu have been hovering over several poultry farms in the surrounding areas of Conakry. Samples were taken by the Guinean Veterinary Services and these samples were sent to Padhova in Italy, to confirm the suspicions. These results are not yet available.

Avian flu in Guinea: "the response continues, no new area of infection" (DN veterinary services)

DuraBy Doura For 4 daysin News

Since its notification in Guinea last May, avian flu continues to claim victims in poultry farms in Coyah and Forécariah.

The response initiated by the Ministry of Health through the National Directorate of Veterinary Services continues. According to its first manager Idriss Doumbouya whom we interviewed this Thursday, June 23, even if there are false alerts in other areas, the infections are currently contained.

“The response continues. Until then, there are no new areas added to those at the start. We had alerts, but luckily they were false alerts. For each new alert we had, the samples sent to Conakry turned out to be negative. Compensation is a sovereign role of the State and it will play this role. For the moment, we are in the process of responding, if we start the compensation, it is something else, ” he said.

In addition, our interlocutor affirmed that because of the non-characterization of the virus for the moment, there is no possibility of using vaccines.

“We authorize the vaccine only when the characterization of the virus is finished, but this is not yet the case. And, all influenza categories are characterized by mutation. If we authorize the vaccine today and tomorrow there is a mutation, then it will be for Covid-19. For the moment, we cannot authorize the vaccine. Beyond that, there is a decree on the molecules to be introduced into Guinea which does not authorize those which could be used against the flu in Guinea. So to introduce this molecule in Guinea even if authorization were given, it will be necessary to change this decree by authorizing this molecule. We can only talk about a vaccine when we are going to complete the characterization, ” he explained.

Guinea slaughters 200,000 poultry at risk of being infected with H5N1 avian flu - government

06/29/2022 | 12:47

Guinea has culled around 200,000 poultry suspected of being infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1, commonly known as bird flu, Agriculture Minister Mamoudou Nagnalen Barry said on Wednesday.

The West African country declared its first six bird flu outbreaks on June 7, which killed a total of 120,478 poultry.

"Our concern is to prevent it from spreading to areas where the outbreak has not yet been declared," Barry said.

Current outbreaks were contained about 50 and 100 kilometers from the capital Conakry, in the prefectures of Coyah and Forecariah, he added.

Avian flu in Guinea: "To date, we have the means to deal with this" (Minister)

BY MADELEINE KOTUS June 29, 2022 at 1:04 PM

In Guinea, the poultry sector is confronted with the avian flu epidemic, which has been raging for almost a month. A crisis that has plunged a good number of breeders into the loss of their business. Providing details on Wednesday on the control strategies put in place by the government, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock also hinted that the country is now ready to deal with it.

“It's a wave that affects us all. This affects us enormously. Me, it even blocks me in my policies because the poultry sector is the second most important sector in the ministry after rice production. All the policies we have put in place are somewhat suspended to first control the flu. It's true that several farms are affected by avian flu and around 200,000 slaughtered heads, that's a lot for the sector,” explained Mamadou Nagnalen Barry.

Regarding the control of the crisis in the sector, the Minister of Agriculture says he has all the means at his disposal to limit the spread of the virus.

“Since we had suspicions of the crisis, we have set up commissions as if it were real. This is what allowed us not to leave the initial zone of the crisis. Because the crisis started in Coyah and Forécariah. So we control the crisis in these areas. What worries us is that it goes to Dubréka, to Kindia. Teams are set up. But we need physical labor but the Minister of Technical Education has sent us students to pick up the strings that are left by the infected animals, dig holes to put them in and also burn the infected hens. To date we have the means to deal with this and we have great hopes of maintaining the flu so that it does not go beyond that,” he said.

The Minister also indicated that the actors affected by this crisis will be supported:

“We will do everything we can to support them. But there I cannot say how we are going to support them because we have not yet finished controlling the crisis. I don't know what the extent of the crisis will be. So we're not going to make promises that we can't keep, maybe I don't want to. But I assure you that all these people will not be abandoned,” he concluded.

Guinea: the slaughter of poultry due to avian flu, one of the causes of the increase in the price of egg cells (Farmers)

By Doura Since 20 hours.in News , Latest News , Company

If until then, Guineans could count on eggs to meet their vitamin B12 needs, lately, you have to pay about the price of a kilogram of meat, 60,000 GNF (very little consumed by the way in some families), to have a cell of 30 eggs.

Several reasons would explain this situation, according to several actors in the livestock sector who opened their doors to us through an immersion that led us to Wonkifong in the prefecture of Coyah.

But first of all, at the market of Cité Enco 5, commune of Ratoma, where we started our journey, a wholesaler confided that this crisis is linked to several reasons including, among others, the breaking of farms by the previous regime, but also the recent slaughter of poultry caused by bird flu

"The first thing is the crisis resulting from the abandonment of the old regime and many farmers lost during this time and after that, there was the arrival of the avian flu which caused the slaughter poultry and after this stage the import of chickens was banned by the authorities, so many farmers lost out. For example, I had 4 suppliers, but now it's only one who supplies me and he also doesn't send eggs to me alone, because he has a lot of other customers. is what makes him share his merchandise among his different customers. Before, I could have up to 400 cells with him, but currently it's 90 or 80. And if I want to have a lot, I have to send the money to Labé and with that, there's expenses, explains Yaya Barry.

Unlike his predecessor, Amadou Bah believes that this crisis is rather elsewhere. “The current problem is that we don't have any imports in Guinea because of inflation due to imports and we don't have enough farms to satisfy Guinea. There is also the culling that has taken place recently because of the bird flu and that is also impacting,” he added.

After the capital, we went to Wonkifong, a locality in Coyah prefecture where there are several farms to find out more. On site, at least at the level of the poultry farm where we were received, out of 10 chicken coops, only one is operational as the images below prove.

"Before the flu, all these henhouses were full and we could produce nearly 1,000 cells or more in a week," says a farmer.

Note that currently, an egg is sold in some places in Conakry at 2,500 Guinean francs and the cell varies between 50,000 GNF and 60,000 GNF.

Support for poultry farmers affected by avian flu: Concerns grow over delays in the delivery of 500,000 chicks promised by the government

By Mamadou Yaya Diallo-June 11, 2025

“The food we were given will expire in a few months. And if we don't get the chicks on time, it will be a huge loss that will wipe out all the government's efforts. We are 95 victims affected. And of these 95, only 34 have received the chicks. And in this group of 34, many have not yet received their full orders,” confided Elhadj Sanoussy Diallo, president of the collective of victims of bird flu in 2022 in Guinea.

In 2022, several poultry farms were decimated by avian flu in the prefectures of Coyah and Forécariah, in the Maritime Guinea region. The 95 victims joined forces to request assistance from the Guinean government and its partners. This appeal was finally heard, and support measures were taken for these farmers. As a result, in March 2025, more than 6,000 tons of feed inputs (corn, concentrates, etc.) were delivered to these poultry farmers by the government and its development partners, including the World Bank.

This extremely important gesture was welcomed by the beneficiaries, who have been waiting for concrete support from the Guinean authorities for three years. But, according to a source close to the matter interviewed by Guineematin.com, a real obstacle is currently hindering the government's efforts on the ground. This is the delay in the delivery of chicks. In total, 500,000 chicks are expected by poultry farmers. And to date, our source assures us, not even half have been delivered by the supplier who acquired the contract from the government.

“When the flu struck, the government committed to supporting the victims. The World Bank also committed to helping victims with food (corn, concentrate, etc.) and chicks. FODA also promised to provide zero-interest credit to victims for their businesses. Now, food and credit are already available. But the chicks are slow to be delivered. Since last March until today, 32 victims (out of 95) have received their chicks. And yet, the food will expire in a few months. It was food for eight months that was given. And almost four months have passed without the farmers receiving the chicks. This is a great concern for us. We ask the government to pay attention to this situation, by calling on the supplier to fulfill its obligations, so that the efforts already made are not in vain,” our source explained. anonymity.

According to our information, two categories of chicks are to be delivered to the affected poultry farmers. These are imported chicks and local chicks. However, the delivery process is being delayed on all sides, with no clear explanation being given to the beneficiaries. Hence the concern among the latter, especially since the feed inputs made available to them are due to expire in six months.

Reached by telephone by Guineematin.com this afternoon, Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Elhadj Sanoussy Diallo, a poultry farmer in Kakoulimaya (Coyah) and president of the collective of victims of bird flu in 2022 in Guinea, confirmed this information. He also expressed his concern about the delay in the delivery of the chicks.

Elhadj Sanoussy Diallo, poultry farmer in Kakoulimaya (Coyah) and president of the collective of victims of avian flu in 2022 in Guinea
“When we had the problem (bird flu), the government promised to help us cope with our losses. And by the grace of God, the authorities kept their promises. They gave us money on credit with a zero percent (0%) interest rate. They also gave us enough feed for the chicks, each according to their order. We are very happy for all this and we thank the government. Now, where we are currently having difficulties is in the acquisition of chicks. In three months, the supplier has not yet delivered even 50% of the orders. This is a great worry for us. Because the feed we were given will expire in a few months. And if we do not deliver the chicks on time, it will be a huge loss that will destroy all the government's efforts. We are 95 victims affected. And among these 95, only 34 have received the chicks. And in this group of 34, many have not yet received all of their orders,” he confided.

To better illustrate his point, Elhadj Sanoussy Diallo cites his own case as an example. He assures that he, personally, only received 10,000 chicks out of an order for 30,000. While the feed he has already purchased is intended for the consumption of 30,000 chicks over a period of eight years.

“Personally, I ordered 30,000 chicks. But so far, I've only received 10,000 chicks. We met with the supplier and discussed this concern, but the situation hasn't really changed. And we're really worried. Because the government has already given us the credit, and if we don't get the chicks to carry out the activities for which we received this money, we'll be wasting the money we were given. And that will be another problem for us, because this money is a credit to be repaid. So, we're asking the government to intervene to ensure the timely delivery of the chicks. Otherwise, everything they gave us will be lost,” he said.
