Health authorities detected six cases of leptospirosis in Guatemala

Guatemalan health authorities found six cases of leptospirosis in the country, but there have been no casualties, an official source said today.

According to Greta Beltran, of the National Zoonoses Public Health Ministry, the cases of people ill with leptospirosis were reported in communities of the south coast of Guatemala, who were affected by Tropical Storm Agatha "in June. "The water was stalled by heavy rains that caused the storm, became contaminated with urine of infected animals," he said.

The official also said that during the dry season because there are cases of animal pests fleeing forest fires. During 2010, the Integrated System of Health Services has identified six cases of leptospirosis in the departments of Escuintla and Suchitep?quez, both on the south coast, he said. Last year there were 13 cases and Zacapa Escuintla, the latter in the east.

The disease is spread by contact with infected water with animal urine carry leptospirosis and rats are the largest source of pollution, according to Guatemalan health authorities.

The Ministry of Health announced that it has a drug called doxycycline to treat the disease in the country. In Nicaragua, the disease this year has caused 16 deaths and 259 people infected, health officials said that Central American country.

Las autoridades sanitarias guatemaltecas detectaron seis casos de leptospirosis en el pa?s, pero no se han registrado v?ctimas mortales, inform? hoy una fuente oficial.

Seg?n Greta Beltran, del Programa Nacional de Rabia y otras Zoonosis del Ministerio de Salud P?blica, los casos de personas enfermas con leptospirosis se registraron en comunidades de la costa sur guatemalteca, que fueron afectadas por la tormenta tropical "Agatha" en junio pasado. "El agua que qued? estancada por las copiosas lluvias que gener? la tormenta, se contaminaron con or?n de animales infectados", sostuvo.

La funcionaria aclar? que tambi?n en ?poca seca se registran casos debido a las plagas de animales que huyen de los incendios forestales. Durante 2010 el Sistema Integral de Servicios de Salud ha detectado seis casos de leptospirosis en los departamentos de Escuintla y Suchitep?quez, ambos en la costa sur, precis?. El a?o pasado se registraron 13 casos en Escuintla y Zacapa, ?ste ?ltimo en el oriente del pa?s.

La enfermedad se transmite por contacto con agua infectada con orina de animales portadores de leptospirosis y las ratas son el mayor foco de contaminaci?n, seg?n las autoridades sanitarias guatemaltecas.

El Ministerio de Salud anunci? que dispone de un f?rmaco conocido como doxicilina para tratar la enfermedad en el pa?s. En Nicaragua, esa enfermedad ha provocado este a?o 16 muertes y 259 personas infectadas, seg?n las autoridades sanitarias de ese pa?s centroamericano.
