Guatemala, 25 Jul (Notimex) .- A total of eight people have died in Guatemala for human influenza, after only one death had been reported since last May when the first known case of the virus H1N109 in the country, health authorities reported today.
Minister of Health of Guatemala, Celso Cerezo, said at a news conference Saturday that the seven deaths occurred during the last week in public hospitals.
Until this new balance of the disease, health authorities only acknowledged the death of a man for a human influenza.
There was also another case of a child is infected with the virus, but he died of kidney failure, so the authorities do not account for deaths from influenza among humans.
Cherry pointed out that in the last week 63 people were found infected with the virus H1N109, bringing the number of patients increased to 458 nationwide since May 5 when he recognized the first case in the country.
The official said that two of the fatal human influenza-seven of the total-were also infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
In the previous tally of last Monday, when the number of cases stood at 395 -, the Ministry of Health said that 94 percent of patients are "cured" and that others were responding satisfactorily to treatment.
Cherry said it is necessary to prevent extreme measures to avoid spread of the virus H1N109 because this disease is here to stay "and must learn to live with it.
Besides the opportunity to reject allegations of the Office of Human Rights in the sense that the public clinics and hospitals lack medicine against human influenza.
The minister stressed that there are at least 30 thousand to treatments deemed sufficient for the moment to confront the disease situation in the country.
