Due to the beginning of the season in which dengue transmission increases in the country, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance -MSPAS-, through the Directorate of Epidemiology and Risk Management, issued an “Epidemiological Alert”, with the purpose of strengthening the control and prevention plans for this disease.

The institutional alert establishes several important actions, such as epidemiological surveillance, for which the application of protocols for the detection, notification and registration of cases in hospitals and health areas is ordered, as well as a weekly update of the epidemiological situation of the disease. .

The global incidence of dengue has increased considerably over the last two decades both globally and in the Region of the Americas, where 80% of cases worldwide are recorded.

In Guatemala, until epidemiological week 7 of 2024, it stands out that until February 17, 6,760 cases of dengue were registered. Of this total, 31 cases of severe dengue are reported, of which there are 3 deaths. On the other hand, 2 cases of chikungunya and 1 of Zika are reported.

As the Ministry of Health, we reiterate to the Guatemalan population that, if they suspect dengue symptoms such as fever, headache, joint pain and pain behind the eyes, among others, it is important to go to a Health service and not self-medicate. Early and timely care being vital to becoming seriously ill.

To counteract the risk of dengue, it is essential to inspect the surroundings of homes such as patios, gardens and other areas to avoid breeding grounds for mosquitoes, as well as the containers where water is stored, which must be protected.

Constant monitoring

The report highlights that 15 Departmental Directorates of Comprehensive Health Services Networks -DDRISS- exceed the national incidence of dengue, with the highest risk being Zacapa, Santa Rosa, Jutiapa, Sacatepéquez, Baja Verapaz, El Progreso, Chiquimula, Escuintla, Suchitepéquez and Quetzaltenango. The circulation of four serotypes of this virus has been identified in the country.

Given the above, constant surveillance and monitoring is maintained by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance; Also, actions such as entomological surveys, case search, nebulization, disposal, promotion and education in communities continue.

The population is urged to maintain actions such as periodic washing of batteries and areas to store water for consumption, turning over containers such as tires, pots and bottles to avoid water stagnation, discarding all those containers that are not used and that can store water. of rain, this, among other actions.

It is important to prioritize timely diagnosis and identification of warning signs for the proper management and treatment of patients, which is why the Ministry of Health reiterates to Guatemalans to follow the recommendations so that together they can continue the fight against dengue.
