As part of the surveillance and monitoring of dengue, the Directorate of Epidemiology and Risk Management of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance announces the epidemiological situation of dengue in Guatemala, with data as of week 34 of 2023.

Preliminary data, updated to August 26, show an increase to 14,299 cases of dengue, of which 36 correspond to severe dengue, with a record of 28 deaths. Zacapa continues to be the department with the highest rate of cases and incidence with 1,045 registered cases for a rate of 378.7 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Of serious cases, 58 suspects are registered, 36 confirmed, 28 deceased and 9 under investigation. Compared to the same week of 2022 (5,150), there is an increase of 178% more cases (14,299), of which 14% correspond to dengue with alarm signs and 85% to dengue without alarm signs, being Zacapa is the department with the highest incidence of dengue with warning signs.

By sex group, 53% correspond to women (7,583 of 14,299), and by age, the most affected is between 5 and 9 years of both sexes.
constant monitoring

Thirteen of the Departmental Directorates of Comprehensive Health Services Networks exceed the national incidence of dengue, being, after Zacapa, the ones with the highest risk: Chiquimula, Petén Sur Oriental, Escuintla, Quetzaltenango, Baja Verapaz and Sacatepéquez.

It is important to mention that constant vigilance and monitoring is maintained by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance. Also, actions such as entomological surveys, search for cases, nebulization, scrapping, promotion and education in communities continue.

The population is urged to maintain actions such as periodic washing of sinks and areas to store water for consumption, turning containers such as tires, pots and bottles to avoid stagnation of water, discarding all those containers that they do not use and they can store rainwater, among others.

The personnel of the health services network remains alert to care for the population with symptoms in each first, second and third level service, the Protocol for the Clinical Management of Dengue is applied, so if any member of the family or workplace presents any alarm symptoms such as fever, vomiting, severe abdominal pain or bleeding, immediately consult the health services.
