The Ministry of Health is concerned about the increase in dengue cases that are beginning to be reported in the country, where so far there have been 3 deaths from the hemorrhagic variant.

According to Salud, in two and a half years the numbers of real cases have decreased since all efforts have focused on the covid-19 pandemic.

Pedro Yax, coordinator of the Arbovirus Program of the Guatemalan Ministry of Health, participated this Monday, August 22, in the conference of public officials at the National Palace of Culture, where he spoke about the prevention of arboviral infections, or infections transmitted by arthropods, including dengue.

August 26 marks the International Day Against Dengue and in this context, Yax mentioned that dengue outbreaks in Guatemala began in the 1980s and that until 2014 only that disease was heard, but in 2015 others such as zika and chikungunya and now there are others that have joined the arbovirus infections.

He pointed out that these infections, such as dengue, occur mostly in urban and peri-urban areas and that is why the alarm and risk situation is quite complex for cities, because it is the great threat that has been seen in recent years, Yax said.

He referred that in recent years the number of dengue cases has increased worldwide, and that in Guatemala, in 2019 the vector area of the Ministry of Health recorded more than 50 thousand cases, 79 deaths and more than 130 cases of dengue. hemorrhagic.

He added that in 2020 more than 5 thousand cases were detected and in 2021 more than 3 thousand 500 cases.
Three deaths in 2022

Yax commented that 2022, in epidemiological week 28, there are already 3,213 cases, 9 serious and 3 deceased.

Yax commented that this area is responsible for the primary and secondary prevention of dengue and that the first basically refers to not exposing yourself to mosquito bites, avoiding all bad habits, being in environments where there are outbreaks, where there is transmission of the disease, use repellents of natural origin and better wear appropriate clothing so that the skin is not further exposed to the bite of mosquitoes.

He added that in terms of secondary prevention, it refers to the early detection of cases, a rapid clinical diagnosis and a fairly clear, precise and friendly orientation with respect to the patient, so that he has confidence and security and feels better when he leaves. of a health service.
hit the pandemic

Yax commented that when the pandemic entered Guatemala, it brought a lot of impact to the activities carried out in Health and reduced some activities and the concern focused on the covid-19 pandemic and that also largely affected the development of operational control activities. and surveillance of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Guatemala.

“When the pandemic entered Guatemala, it brought a lot of impact to the activities carried out in Health; It reduced some activities and the concern was focused on the covid-19 pandemic and that also greatly affected the development of operational activities for the control and surveillance of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Guatemala, "said Yax....
